STEAM

Our students visit science labs, innovations labs, learn to hypothesize, and use technology to enhance their knowledge of STEAM. After building this foundation, students incorporate engineering applications through design-thinking and project-based learning.

Coding & Robotics

Early coding and robotics begins in PreK when students discover how to code ozobots and other directional robots and extends to the upper grade levels in Lower School when students learn to design, build, and program.

Music

Students in PreK-5th grades build musicianship through singing, listening, dancing, improvising, analyzing, and creating music every day. In 4th-6th grades, students can expand their musical study by participating in chorus, band, or strings.

Arts

Students in PreK-5th grade will explore the creative process, basic art media and techniques, such as drawing, painting, collage, ceramics, printmaking, color theory, and sculpture. Art criticism, aesthetics, and art history are also integral parts of the class. Sixth graders are given the option of a Studio Art elective where those who have a passion for art will increase technical skills and develop a sophisticated approach to process and subject matter.

Active Outdoor Learning

Opportunities to learn and grow extend from classrooms to the great outdoors. PreK and kindergarten classrooms open into a 7,100-square-foot sensory courtyard, where students build fine and gross motor skills, imagination, and friendships.

Adjacent to the Lower School building is a flourishing community garden (Mr. Brian's Garden) and outdoor classroom. Through a complete sensory experience of students seeing, touching, listening, smelling, and even tasting, the ultimate goal of our community garden is to raise children with a love of the outdoors and ecosystems.

Responsive Classroom

We believe that how children learn is as important as what they learn because academic success is inextricably connected to building social-emotional competencies. By embracing the Responsive Classroom approach, we prioritize our students’ social, emotional, and academic growth within LHP’s safe and supportive school community. Teacher language, logical consequences, established routines, and age-appropriate choices foster student autonomy and independence.

As parents of three young children, it was incredibly important for us to find a school we trusted with all aspects of their social and academic lives. We have found that in Lake Highland. We couldn’t be any more proud of the school or excited for the future of our children. Above all else, we continue to be impressed by the amazing teachers. They are the heart and soul of the school and provide unparalleled support, encouragement, and love to both students and parents.
