Fostering Musicianship and Creativity
Starting in PreK, students are immersed in musicianship through singing, listening, dancing, improvising, analyzing, and creating music daily. From 4th grade, students can explore and expand their musical knowledge by participating in chorus, band, and orchestra. The music department emphasizes collaboration and creativity and believes participating in these ensembles further improves students' critical thinking and self-expression skills.
Band
The Highlander Band program provides opportunities for all students to refine their musical skills, sharpen their creative senses, and apply leadership skills. Beginning in 5th grade, students can learn a wind or percussion instrument. As students progress through the program, they develop musicianship and discipline and hone their creative senses by performing varied repertoire in public and adjudicated performances. Students apply these skills in the Hour of Darkness Jazz Lab, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, and through solo and chamber ensemble opportunities.
Orchestra
The Orchestra program centers on developing sensitive and adept string musicians from beginning through advanced levels. Students in the orchestra program develop skills such as tone, pitch, rhythm, posture, dynamics, and performance techniques to be successful in the classroom and on stage.
Chorus
Lake Highland’s chorus program offers opportunities for all students beginning in 4th grade. In chorus, students learn to read and perform music from diverse styles and cultures. They also develop vocal techniques, including tone quality, breath control, resonance, and musical expression. The Lower School Chorus and Highland Singers perform in several concerts on campus and at local and national choral festivals yearly.
