Mathematics

The Upper School Mathematics Department strives to instill a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of mathematics. Our aim is to equip students with the ability to read, write, explore, and confidently communicate mathematical concepts. As they progress through a well-structured course sequence, students gain proficiency in utilizing mathematics as a practical tool in their lives. The curriculum is flexible, rigorous, and innovative to fit the needs of a wide range of student abilities. Striking a balance between traditional teaching methods—such as lectures, proofs, and explanations—and progressive approaches involving technology, group work, projects, and presentations, we strive to create a dynamic and enriching learning experience for all students.

Social Studies

Through a skills-based social studies curriculum, students investigate historical events, psychology, government, personal finance, and economics. Freshmen are introduced to world history and progress to American history as sophomores. Continuing through the study of American government during their junior and senior years, students expand their knowledge of the social, political, economic, cultural, and intellectual impacts of world events, global leaders, and innovators.

Engaging and rigorous instruction equips students with valuable linguistic skills as well as the cultural adaptability to prepare for a globally connected future. The program also offers students the opportunity to develop a comprehensive awareness of local and global citizenship and exposes them to the benefits of being multilingual, which offers them diverse career opportunities and life-enriching experiences. Students who excel in their studies are invited to participate in language-based state and national competitions, as well as induction into the Chinese, French, Latin, and Spanish Honor Societies.
