Preparing Students for Lifelong Learning
Lake Highland’s College and Career Center provides a comprehensive college planning program from 9th through 12th grade. A team of eight full-time employees are dedicated to helping students plan for their futures one step at a time. All of LHP’s college counselors formerly worked in college admission offices, providing expert and unique insight for Highlanders as they pursue their collegiate dreams.

Highlander Highlight: College Chat
Throughout the school year, College Counselors host meetings for parents about trending topics in high schools and colleges. Parents can also ask questions and gain clarification about different aspects of the college process.
Freshman Year
- Individual student and parent meetings with a school counselor
- Scoir for College & Career Planning: Scoir expands college access and improves student outcomes by connecting students, supporters, high schools, and colleges for a better admissions experience. Students gain access to Scoir in ninth grade.
Highlander Highlight: Freshman Seminar
All 9th graders are required to enroll in Freshman Seminar during the first semester of their freshman year. This course lays the foundation for a successful transition from Middle School to Upper School.
Sophomore year
- The Sophomore Experience: provides guidance on how to start the college search
- Individual student and parent meetings with a school counselor
- Scoir for College & Career Planning: Scoir expands college access and improves student outcomes by connecting students, supporters, high schools, and colleges for a better admissions experience.
Highlander Highlight: Sophomore College Tour
Learning first-hand about the college visit experience, sophomores travel to two vastly different colleges/universities to complete a campus tour. Students gain valuable information on various college options and are able to ask questions to better understand their “best fit” school.
Junior year
- The College Forum: provides insight into the application process from a panel of college admission professionals
- Individual student and parent meetings with a college counselor to launch the college search process
- Meetings with college representatives
- Job shadow experience

Highlander Highlight: College Planning 101
In the spring, juniors attend 40-minute college planning classes on various topics beginning with the college search process, types of college applications, and college essays.
Senior year
- Individual student and parent meetings with a college counselor
- Meetings with representatives from colleges
- Transition to College Meeting for Senior Parents: This program focuses on supporting parents as their child transitions from high school to college.
- Senior Pop-Ups: College counselors set up outdoor locations throughout the campus to answer questions about the college application process. Senior Pop-Ups occur randomly throughout the year.
- Naviance Family Connection for College & Career Planning: Naviance by PowerSchool is the leading platform for college, career, and life readiness. It enables students to discover their strengths and interests to find their best-fit path and career after high school.
Highlander Highlight: College Bootcamp for Senior Parents
In an effort to support their child, senior parents meet virtually in the fall to learn the nuts and bolts of the application process from beginning to end.
