Inspiring patriotism is one of the four pillars in the mission of Lake Highland Preparatory School. Since its founding in 1970, the school has embraced this noble charge with enthusiasm and dedication. Lake Highland devotes abundant resources in its efforts to honor and celebrate the people who have bravely and heroically served our country – the people who have defended it and protected it in the name of freedom.
As a service to our students, families and community, Lake Highland produced the school’s first Veterans Day celebration in 1998, a celebratory program for United States veterans and servicemen and women and the LHPS family. The Veterans Day Salute is eagerly anticipated by anyone who has seen it. The Salute commemorates all veterans- those who are no longer with us, those whose service has ended but they are contributing citizens in other arenas, and those still serving today. With spectacular musical numbers, band performances, dance numbers, and dramatic interpretations, audiences are entertained and charmed by more than 500 talented children and faculty members. Throughout the program, tributes are made to each of the five branches of the armed services - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard- including a stirring rendition of the branches service hymns. Each year, veterans, students, families and guests are invited to attend one of three performances and the Canteen Reception following.
In 2005, the City of Orlando asked Lake Highland to produce the City’s official Veterans Day event in the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre! So the school’s talent went there to produce another spectacular salute.
