Philosophy Statement

The Physical Education (PE) program at Lake Highland Preparatory School (LHPS) provides students with an environment that nurtures physical, social, and emotional development. Class instruction develops the student’s ability to work cooperatively with others and instills a positive view of fitness and lifetime physical activities. Regularly scheduled daily instructional PE classes provide maximum physical development through progressive motor skills acquisition and functional learning experiences. These experiences afford the students the opportunity to meet and/or exceed benchmarks established by the National Association for Sport & Physical Education (NASPE) for the units of the curriculum. Physical Education Assessments will be sent home once per semester. State-of-the-art Athletic facilities including an Olympic pool, a track/football stadium and a fully equipped gymnasium maximize opportunities in PE classes.

Swim Schedule

Please locate your child’s LS PE teacher’s name listed below. His/her PE class is scheduled to swim in Physical Education class during the week/s listed. 

Students are asked to bring a swim suit (one piece for girls, or a t-shirt worn over a two piece), pool shoes, and a towel. Goggles are optional. Swimming is taught by American Red Cross certified swim instructor, Mike Curley. If you have any questions please call Coach Curley at 407-206-1900 ext. 1180.

1st grade and 2nd grade will swim one week per semester. 1st grade will swim the first week listed and 2nd grade will swim the second week listed. Grades 3rd-6th will swim both weeks scheduled.

FITNESSGRAM/ACTIVITYGRAM

MISSION: FITNESSGRAM/ACTIVITYGRAM program is to promote lifelong physical activity among youth. The program endorses a long-term view of physical education in which the long-term view of physical education in which the promotion of lifelong habits of physical activity is the primary goal.  Developing fitness and improving skills are important in physical education, but these objectives should be framed within a broader goal aimed at providing children with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to be active for a lifetime.



5th/6th GRADE

PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES 


A. DRESS

A change in dress is required for physical education class in grades 5-6th. Uniforms may be purchased in the school store, which is located in Rex Building.
The complete Physical Education uniform will be worn each day, unless otherwise specified by the instructor.
The student’s full name must be written on both the Physical Education t-shirt and shorts.
Baseball caps and sunglasses are only permitted during outside activity.
PE uniforms must be presentable and fit properly. Regardless of weather conditions, students should be prepared to dress out each day. During cold weather, students may wear warm-ups, or a jacket over their required dress. All bags should be on the benches, or hanging from a hook. Nothing will be left on the floor.
Students arriving late to class will be allowed to dress out only if other students are still in the process of changing due to locker room supervision policies.

B. LOCKER ROOM PROCEDURES

Students will enter PE class through the front doors of the gym or the side doors of the Meffe Field House. A PE coach will greet you at the locker room door. At no time shall a student be in the locker room without the supervision of a coach.
 Exit the locker room and go directly to your roll call line and be seated.
After dressing in after class students will return to their roll call line in the gym to be dismissed as a group.

C. PARTICIPATION POLICIES

Students will receive a warning the first two times they do not dress out and will be allowed to participate at the discretion of the teacher. On the third offense, student’s will not be allowed to participate and will be written up to the Dean.
Parental excuses should include date, reason for excuse, and a parent’s signature.
If the excuse exceeds three days, a written medical note from a doctor will be needed.
Following a medical excuse, a doctor’s release will be needed with instructions to ensure the safety of the student for future participation in PE class.
A student with a doctor’s medical excuse who cannot participate may be assigned a duty, task, or written work to earn their participation points. A student may be placed in a study hall if the student is unable to participate for an extended period of time.
Students not dressing out will be written up and reported to the dean on the conduct report form.

D. INJURIES

Any injury occurring during a Physical Education class must be reported to the PE instructor immediately, so the appropriate measures can be taken.

7th/8th GRADE

Students will still be required to dress out if they have a written excuse.

  • PE uniforms must be presentable and fit properly. Regardless of weather conditions, students should be prepared to dress out each day. During cold weather, students may wear warm ups, or a jacket over their required dress.
  • Students arriving late to class will be allowed to dress out only if locker room supervision can be provided.

Physical Education students will be graded on the following criteria:
Dressing out and participation: 60%
Personal Fitness activities: 20% (Fitness days/Fitness testing)
Unit Knowledge and Sportsmanship: 20%

F. GYM/LOCKER ROOM RULES

No open food, drinks, or gum are allowed in the locker room or gym area.
All students are to report immediately to the gym and sit in their assigned area after dressing out.

Course Descriptions

Dance (Elective) One Semester

Middle School Dance offers students the opportunity to pursue a variety of styles of dance comprising the art form. In accordance with the national dance curriculum, students will be introduced to terminology, theory, history, and technique. Specific cross-training skills include balance, coordination, rhythm, posture, and timing, as well as strength building and overall fitness. It is expected that students will bring a mature sense of responsibility and a positive approach to learning within each level and assignment. Dance II, III, and IV are progressive courses, and evaluation is based on skill-level attainment and a demonstrated proficiency in technique, performance, theory, and terminology. Seventh- and eighth-grade students may choose to take Dance in place of the Physical Education requirement or as an elective.

Physical Education Boys and Girls (Required) – 1501110 One Semester

The purpose of this course is to help students develop physically and socially through team and individual sports. Topics include, but are not limited to, physical fitness, volleyball, swimming, basketball, recreational games, aerobics, soccer, track and field, and tennis. One semester required, both seventh and eighth grade.
