EDISON
Edison Program Philosophy

Edison Program at Lake Highland Preparatory School serves LHPS students with documented learning disabilities. Like all Lake Highland students, Edison participants must meet the school’s admission criteria.

Edison Program is a learning resource and support adjunct within the Student Services Department. Edison Program is coordinated and staffed by learning disability specialists. Edison Program provides services that include, but are not limited to, student advocacy, support for a teaching program that addresses the student’s needs, and individualized and/or small group instruction.

Ultimately, the goal of Edison Program is to support a student, with a documented learning disability, to the extent that individualized instructional sessions are no longer required to make academic and social progress.

Edison Program Procedures

When a student meets the admission criteria and is enrolled at LHPS with a current psychological evaluation with a documented learning disability and recommendations for accommodations, he/she becomes eligible for Edison Program. When students enrolled at LHPS do not have documentation related to a learning disability and begin to display a need for support, the LHPS educational team (Teacher, parent, Guidance Counselor, Edison Resource Teacher) must complete and/or review: (1) grades, (2) teacher-parent correspondence documenting concerns, and (3) psychological evaluation and diagnosis. When documentation substantiates a learning disability or other need for accommodations, such as, speech-language, the student will be accepted for Edison Program.

A support plan is then established for the student by the Edison Resource Teacher that includes the appropriate classroom accommodations, learner skills, and/or social skills. The Edison Resource Teacher will assist and support the teaching staff to implement the student’s support plan through alternative teaching strategies and accommodations. Periodic classroom observations will occur by the Edison Resource Teacher to ensure that the support plan remains relevant to the student’s needs. Correspondence between the teacher-parent-Edison Resource Teachers will occur to ensure consistency across teaching environments.
