Philosophy Statement

The Physical Education (PE) program at Lake Highland Preparatory School (LHPS) provides students with an environment that nurtures physical, social, and emotional development. Class instruction develops the student’s ability to work cooperatively with others and instills a positive view of fitness and lifetime physical activities. Regularly scheduled daily instructional Pe classes provide maximum physical development through progressive motor skills acquisition and functional learning experiences. These experiences afford the students the opportunity to meet and/or exceed benchmarks established by the National Association for Sport & Physical Education (NASPE) for the units of the curriculum. Physical Education Assessments will be sent home once per semester. State-of-the-art Athletic facilities including an Olympic pool, a track/football stadium and a fully equipped gymnasium maximize opportunities in Pe classes.

Presidential Physical Fitness Testing Tips

http://fitness.gov/getfit.pdf

FOCUS: Motivate students to strive for a higher level of fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

ORGANIZATION: The following are exercises needed to qualify for the presidential or national awards. Check scores against the chart below.

Sit-Ups: Sit on the floor with your knees flexed, feet about shoulder width apart. Place hands on opposite shoulders, arms close to chest. A partner will hold your feet and count each sit-up. Raise your trunk up to touch elbows to thighs. This is a timed event. The goal is to do as many as possible in one minute.

Pull-ups: Grasp the bar with an overhand grip. Feet should not touch the floor and legs should hang straight. Begin by hanging with your arms straight. Pull your body up with a steady movement until your chin is above the bar. After each successful attempt return to the straight position. There is no time limit to do as many as possible.

Shuttle Run: Two shuttles are placed behind a line drawn 30 feet from the starting line. On the signal "Ready Go" run to the shuttle, pick one up, bring it back and place it behind the starting line. Then run and pick up the second shuttle. Fastest of two trials is recorded.

Mile walk/Run: At the signal "Ready Go" begin running. Walking is permitted, However; the goal is to complete the mile as fast as possible. Record Time.

Sit & Reach: Sit on the floor with legs straight and feet held against the flat end of the box. Place your hands along the measuring line, one hand on top of the other and reach as far as you can. No bouncing is allowed. You may take off your shoes. Three practice tries are allowed and the fourth try is recorded.

Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge

ORGANIZATION: The following are exercises needed to qualify for the presidential or national awards. Check scores against the chart below.

Components of Presidents Fitness Challenge:

All of these must be met at the 85% or better to achieve the President’s Level of Fitness.

Pushups: The student lies face down on the floor with hands under shoulders, fingers straight, and legs straight, then lowers body until the elbows are at the 90-degree angle. The student’s body weight has less effect on the right angle push-up than it does on pull-ups and therefore makes a better indicator of range of strength and endurance.

Shuttle Run: Two beanbags are placed behind a line drawn 30 feet from the starting line. On the signal "Ready Go" run to the beanbags, pick one up, bring it back and place it behind the starting line. Then run and pick up the second beanbag.
