Lake Highland Middle School Parents and Students,
The Eighth Grade Recognition Ceremony last evening was a wonderful celebration of our students’ successful year. The class of 2016’s commitment to academics, athletics, the arts, and friendship will have an overpowering impact on the LHPS Upper School over the next four years. The LHPS Middle School celebrates and appreciates each of you. Good luck on your final exams and The May’N Event presentations!
Our Final Exams begin Tuesday! Hopefully, our students have been busy preparing for their tests. Students should pay attention to how each teacher has suggested that they study for the exams. Follow the study guides distributed by teachers and review previous tests.
Students who do not have an exam during the 8:00 AM morning exam period should arrive at school by 10:30 AM. Students who do not have a late morning exam may check out through the middle school office only after the early morning exam period is over. All students are to remain in the exam room for the entire testing period until the designated dismissal time. Students who do not have an exam but must be on campus (van riders, carpool, etc.) are to report to their classroom (designated by the exam period) for a quiet study period. Middle School Student Union will take place through the entire exam week until 5:45 PM. Students will have a Spirit Day throughout the entire week of exams. However, eighth graders will dress in professional attire for their May’N Event presentations on Thursday. Parents picking up and dropping off after 8:15 AM and before 12:15 PM must use the entrance off of Park Lake Street. The beginning and end of the day carpool routine will remain the same as traffic will enter off of Shine Street.

8th
grade Recognition Ceremony
The
8th grade Recognition Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday evening,
May 17, in the Bourne Family Chapel on the Charles Clayton Campus. All participating 8th students
should arrive by 6:30 PM and report to the Middle School cafeteria. As all of you are well aware, we have limited
parking on the Charles Clayton Campus and our neighbors, residents as well as
the merchants, do not look kindly upon events which generate large amounts of
traffic. Therefore, we will offer
shuttle service, beginning at 6:00 PM, from the main campus. Shuttles will load in front of the Gym and
depart for the Charles Clayton Campus every ten minutes. If you choose to try
to park on the Charles Clayton Campus and you find all of the spaces already
taken, we strongly encourage you, and would appreciate very much, that you make
use of the shuttle service rather than parking in merchant parking lots located
near the school. Rest assured that if
you park illegally, your automobile will be ticketed.

Middle School Parents and Students,
Middle School Standardized
Testing
As
stated in the school calendar, standardized tests will be administered in the
Middle School next week, April 16th, 17th, and 18th,
2012. Students in grades 7 and 8 will be tested using the
Comprehensive Testing Program 4 (CTP 4) from the Educational Records Bureau
(ERB), a test designed for independent schools and correlated closely with the
College Board SAT. Needless to say, this is an important educational
evaluation, not only because it measures your child’s current academic
progress, but also because it is one of the factors taken into account when
determining placement for courses taken the following year. While we do
not want the students to become overly-anxious and stressed about these tests,
we would appreciate your assistance in gently impressing upon your child the
serious nature of these tests and that these three days should not be viewed as
simply a break from the daily routine. Students will meet with each
class in an abbreviated form each day. Testing will occur from 9:35am –
11:55am, daily, which will allow the students to go to Fling just prior to
testing and to have lunch immediately following. Attendance is very important
during the three days of testing, as make-up testing will not be provided.
Though we are certain it is the norm, please pay particular attention to
ensuring that your child has an adequate night’s sleep each night and a
nutritious breakfast each morning while taking these standardized tests.
Congratulations to LHPS Middle School Math Teacher Ms. Kathy
Bartz, who was awarded the very prestigious Florida State Mathcounts Coach of
the Year. We are extremely proud of Ms. Bartz and commend her for this extremely
noteworthy achievement.

trip, we will host a parent/student meeting on Tuesday, April 17th,
at 3:30pm in the Bourne Chapel on the Charles Clayton Middle School Campus.
7th
Grade Epcot Trip
The 7th Grade Epcot trip is coming up Friday,
April 27th. 7th grade
students should be dropped off at the Middle School campus by 7:00am that
morning and report to the Chapel. Students should be picked up at the Lake Highland
Athletic Complex parking lot (across the lake from the Main Campus) between

Science News…Check it out!
Due to our success in
various competitions, Lake Highland is well known throughout Central Florida,
the State of Florida and the nation, for its amazing science program. However,
what goes on each day, on our campus, provides the foundation for our students
to be enthused to pursue these endeavors. Wow…it has been an exciting week for
science in the middle school at Lake Highland.
The seventh graders were working on their Weathering & Erosion Stations
while the eighth graders completed the CO2 Dragster Project by creating Automotive
Design Engineering Firms. Yesterday we were fortunate to
have Dr. Kenneth Palmer, from the Global Robotics Institute address our
students and faculty. Dr. Palmer, who
co-founded the first robotic surgery program in Latin America, talked to our
students about the history of robots, the function of robots, robots in
medicine, what it takes to become a robotic surgeon, and the future of robotic
surgery. This look into the future of
medicine was thought-provoking and inspiring!

LHPS Blood Drive
The
Lake Highland Red Cross Club is hosting a blood drive on Tuesday, March 13th,
in the Lakefront Room from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. We are excited to announce
that we have once again partnered with the Community Blood Centers of Central
Florida for this drive. As an added incentive, the CBCCF is donating $20 for
every unit of blood donated towards a scholarship fund for deserving LHP
seniors. To set up your donation time, please call Susan Hay in the Upper
School office, ext. 3268. CBCCF will also be offering sign-up times for Alyx
donations.
Alyx
is a special type of blood donation. It collects transfusion-ready doses
of red blood cells from a single donation by retaining only the needed
components and returning the remaining components to the donor. The Alyx
donation is great for first time donors. The donor loses less fluid
during the donation process and the needle is smaller but it does take a little
longer. Alyx donations are mainly used for cancer patients, trauma
patients, people undergoing heart-bypass surgery, and organ transplants.
The donation process will take about 45 minutes while whole blood donation
takes about 25 minutes.
Please note the
following reminders and items of interest. For
more detailed school-wide announcements and calendar items, please also
check the Week at a Glance on the LHPS website at http://www.lhps.org/lhps/Portals/0/announcements/waag/waag.pdf.

On the meal for the Tuesday, March
13 pickup will be Kansas City BBQ Beef, Macaroni and Cheese, and Southern BBQ
Green Beans. The meal also includes a
green salad and a simple dessert. Please take this opportunity to
order your meal at the following link www.lhps.org/takeout
. Orders must be made by 9:00 AM, Friday, March 9.

used uniform sale! Who knew shopping for uniforms could be so easy and so much
fun?! Thank you also to all of our parent and grandparent volunteers who
helped set-up for and worked at the sale. We would especially like
to thank all of you who donated clothes for the sale. Clothing that was
not sold this year has been donated to Our Little Roses, a girls
orphanage in Honduras, and to Children of the Nations, which
provides clothing for children across Africa.
Yes…we
rocked the Round Robin! Thank you to Tammy Wacker, Mary Ann White &
Clare Hudson for hosting another fantastic Ladies Tennis Round Robin!

Middle School Parents
and Students,
The Middle School FLL
Robotics team placed second overall in the State Championship
this past Sunday at the Florida Institute of Technology. There were over 450
teams in Florida this year, so placing second in the entire state is a huge
accomplishment. The team now gets to move onto the World Invitational
Open. Conveniently, Florida is hosting the FLL World Invitational Open
Tournament, May 3-6 in Polk County, FL. The event will be a 4 day
celebration with 2 full days of competition and culminating with an Award
Ceremony and a celebration at LegoLand Florida. Only 64 Teams from around
the world received an invitation to compete in the world championships! The
tournament website with details is at http://www.poly.usf.edu/Offices/ExtendedEducation/Youth-Programs/FLL_Tournament.html
Congratulations to the Robotics teacher,
Robbie Lee, and the following members of the Middle School Robotics Team, for
receiving the invitation to the World Invitational Open Tournament

The
end of 3rd Grading Period is Thursday, March 8. Friday, March 9th
is a student holiday/teacher workday.
As
previously noted, the Curriculum Night for rising 8th grade (current
7th grade) parents will take place on Wednesday, March 7, 2011 at
6:30 PM in the Bourne Chapel. Teachers
will be available between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM in an Open House forum to discuss
their specific curriculum. After the
Open House, the parents will report to the Bourne Family Chapel for an
introduction to the 8th Grade Curriculum and a review of the course
registration process.
We
thoroughly enjoyed having the sixth grade students visit the Charles Clayton
Middle School Campus for an introduction to the middle school curriculum and a
tour of the campus on Wednesday and Thursday.
Thanks to all of the parents who attended the Curriculum Fair last
night. For those who were not able to
attend your packets have been mailed home.
On-line course
Registration for 2012-2013 School Year, current grades 6-11.
On-line course registration will open up Monday,
March 5. On-line registration closes at midnight on Sunday, March 11,
please be sure to meet that deadline.
During
our weekly Wednesday Assembly, our Middle School BEAST (Bullying Ends As
students Stand Together) Coordinator, Paul Driscoll, closed out the month of
February with a talk about our February Fruit; Love. The talk was centered on 1 Corinthians 13 to the beat of the Beatles; All You Need is Love. It
is a new month, so it means we are rolling out a new Fruit of the Spirit. This
month is Self-Control.
LHPS Blood Drive
The
Lake Highland Red Cross Club is hosting a blood drive on Tuesday, March 13th,
in the Lakefront Room from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. We are excited to
announce that we have once again partnered with the Community Blood Centers of
Central Florida for this drive. As an added incentive, the CBCCF is donating
$20 for every unit of blood donated towards a scholarship fund for deserving
LHP seniors. To set up your donation time, please call Susan Hay in the Upper
School office, ext. 3268. CBCCF will also be offering sign-up times for Alyx
donations.
Alyx
is a special blood donation. It collects transfusion-ready doses of red
blood cells from a single donation by retaining only the needed components,
returning the remaining components to the donor. The Alyx donation is
great for first time donors. The donor loses less fluid during the
donation process and the needle is smaller but it does take a little
longer. Alyx donations are mainly used for cancer patients, trauma
patients, people undergoing heart-bypass surgery, and organ transplants.
The donation process will take about 45 minutes while whole blood donation
takes about 25 minutes.

LHPS Middle School Parents and Students,
Wednesday, February 1st, was the mid-point of the third marking period. Please be sure to log in to your child’s grades on PowerSchool and check on progress to this point.
Having been a coach for many years, I can attest that what takes place on the athletic front at Lake Highland Preparatory School is not representative of most schools throughout the country. This was confirmed on Wednesday, when seventeen of our senior student-athletes were recognized! They signed letters of intent or committed to play collegiate athletics at their respective schools listed below:
Football: Taylor Barton- University of Illinois, Blake Fromang- Vanderbilt University, Ty Law- Southern Methodist University, Ellis Marder- University of Connecticut
Baseball: David Goldberg- Rollins College, Joseph Sleiman- Georgetown University, Tanner Stanley- University of Richmond
Boys Lacrosse: Davis Anderson – Salisbury University, Cody Prizer – University of Tampa, Austin Tamayo – Washington & Lee University
Girls Lacrosse: Lauren Gierke- San Diego State University, Taylor Thomas- Rollins College, Tyler Thomas- Rollins College
Swimming: Sean Duggan- Stanford
Tennis: Maci Epstein- University of Virginia
Volleyball: Caitlin Hankins- Belmont Abbey College
Coverage of this event can be viewed at www.fhsaasports.com/lakehighlandprep.
This list is incomplete as we will have another Signing Day in April. My estimation is that we will have at least eight to ten more students/athletes participate during the April signing ceremony!
Speaking of planning for the future, college, and beyond! The dates for our annual Curriculum Fairs, designed to make our parents aware of their student’s curriculum options for the 2012-2013 school year, are:

this week! Both teams will host Bishop
Moore on Friday night. The Boys District Finals will be played at 6:00 PM

Lake
Highland Middle School Parents and Students,
Monday,
January 16th, is a Student Holiday.
Throughout
this week the sciences were alive and thriving at Lake Highland! As our 7th
graders intensely studied minerals and the 8th graders passionately learned
about electricity, we provided our middle school students with the opportunity
to examine the amazing Upper School Science Fair projects. Students and parents
from all divisions of LHP were in attendance viewing the phenomenal showcase of
the work of our Upper School Science students.
Furthermore, during the Science Fair, our guest presenter, LHP parent
Dr. Vipul Patel, amazed us by presenting his world famous work with medical
robotics. He heads the Nicholson Center for Robotic Surgery on prostate
cancer. The initiatives that he and our Science department are jointly
undertaking will push Lake Highland to even higher levels of growth in the
Science arena. A wonderful surprise announcement was the news, just received
yesterday afternoon, that senior Collin Edwards is a semi-finalist in the
prestigious international Intel Science Competition! Yesterday, Nicole Justice,
Upper School Science teacher, accepted a $1,000 check for a grant we were
awarded by the Florida Association for Water Quality Control. Finally, our middle school Robotics Team had
a great showing in a qualifying tournament this past Saturday. Of the 16 teams
in attendance, Party Boss won first
place in two of the four major categories- they scored the most points in the
robot missions and also won core values. And, for the second tournament in a
row, they won the Champions Award, which is first place overall! Up next is the
Regional Tournament at UCF in early February.
First semester report cards will not be sent home
until Tuesday, January 16th. The
grades may be viewed online this afternoon.
Lake
Highland online re-enrollment will be available through today for current students who wish to return for the
2012-2013 school year. Parents can access re-enrollment contracts on the
LHPS website. Two payment options are offered for the $1,500.00 tuition deposit
– check or electronic check. Your assigned Parent Username and Password
are required to access the re-enrollment contract. ALL contracts and
deposits must be received by LHPS by January 13, 2012 in order to avoid a
$250.00 late fee. The Business Office will have someone in the parking lot
of the Annex next Friday, January 13th
between the hours of 7:15 AM -8:15 AM and 2:15 PM-3:40 PM to collect
re-enrollment contracts.

SUMMER
SPECTACULAR:
It is that time of year again to start making plans for the summer. Does
your rising 9th or 10th grade student (current 8th or 9th) want to live
for one week in the glorious Florida Keys? Do they like to snorkel and
interact with marine wildlife? How would they like to get High School
credit for doing those things? Then the Advanced Marine Research Course
may be the summer class for them. Just like last year we will be taking
students to the Keys to complete their science research projects. The
course is ½ credit, that is both instructional and fun. The course is a
three-week session that includes 2 weeks on campus and 1 week in the
Keys. Summer session 1 will be June 4-22. The trip to the Keys will take
place June 14-19. For more information, dates, times, etc. Direct any other
questions to Nicole Justice (njustice@lhps.org) at extension

Lake
Highland Middle School Parents and Students,
Please
join us on January 11th at 6:00 PM for our Upper School Science
Fair. As part of the Science Fair this year, Dr. Vipul Patel, Medical
Director of the Global Robotics Institute at Celebration Health, will address
our students and parents. Dr. Vipul Patel is widely known in the medical
field for his extensive work in robotics surgery. Even though he has completed
approximately 5,000 robotics-assisted surgeries he comments, “As doctors, we
are always learning and I don’t think that will ever change”! What a terrific
message for all of our students…we are always learning! At the Science Fair, Dr. Vipul Patel will be
sharing his vision for co-curricular science field trips at LHPS. The Science Fair and Dr. Patel’s address is
for all of our students and parents, grades PK-12. Please join the LHPS Science
Department and Dr. Vipul Patel on Wednesday evening, January 11th at
6:00 PM in the Black Box Theater. Dr. Patel’s address will begin at
approximately 6:45 in the HCCA.
First semester report cards will be mailed home on

Take-out
Tuesday
We
will launch a new initiative on January 17th that we think could
help some of our families. We will offer a delicious and nutritious meal
for four you can pick up on campus between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM at Maxwel
Station, the open air pavilion behind the Lower School. The meal will
feature a meat, a vegetable, a starch, a green salad, and a simple dessert, and
will be served hot in an aluminum pan with ample portions to serve four.
The green salad will be served in a separate container with your choice of
dressings. The cost is $25 -- hard to feed a family of four at
McDonald’s for that amount. To reserve your meal sign up and pay on-line
at www.lhps.org/takeout
by 8:00 AM of the preceding Friday so we have enough time to order the food and
prepare it for your pick-up on Tuesday afternoon. We hope the timing fits
your schedule as you collect your children from Academy classes, sports
practices, drama rehearsals, debate, band, chorus, or any of the myriad of
after-school activities at LHPS. Or if your student drives and you trust
child not to eat everything before he or she gets home, your student can pick
up supper for the family. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Our
first Take-out Tuesday on January 17th will feature Herb Roasted
Turkey Breast, Baked Sweet Potato, Whole Green Beans, Green Salad, and
cookies. You
can sign up to order on-line now, but no later than 8:00am on Friday, January
13th to insure your hot meal will be ready for pick up behind the
Lower School between 4:30 and 5:30pm on the 17th.

many challenges will be forthcoming regarding what our sons and daughters
actually want as they become young adults.
Parents, at times, have differing views as to what our children need to

Also,
on Monday night in the Harriet Coleman Center for the Arts, our Middle School
Strings students will be performing at 7:00 PM at our annual LS/MS Strings and
LS Band Concert;.
During
our weekly Wednesday Assembly, Reverend Joe Sims, LHPS Chaplain, graced our
middle school with his presence. In our
efforts to help our students to be B.E.A.S.T
(Bullying Ends As students Stand Together), he focused his message on positive
talk among students and staying away from the rumor mill. He centered his message on James 3:5 (NIV)
which states: 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body,
but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a
small spark. On Thursday, we followed up the Rev’s talk in our Mentor Groups by
having the students participate in “telephone.” The goal of this exercise is to
demonstrate how differing perspectives can alter a story over time thus
creating a “rumor” with very little truth to it. As often happens with
the game, it can also demonstrate how individuals, who have no interest in the
actual statement, may alter it just to be “funny”, thus having the same
deleterious effect. We are continually working at helping our students to be
B.E.A.S.T in the middle school at LHPS!
Semester exams begin on Tuesday, December 13th.

Pay attention to how each teacher has
suggested that you study for the exam. Follow the study guides

Middle
School Parents and Students,
Thank you
to all of the parents and teachers who made the Middle School Halloween Dance a
wonderful success. Over 250 middle school students attended! We especially
appreciate the leadership and commitment of parents Silvia Visconti and Lisa
Sidhu, who along with Student Council Coordinators Emily Pardick and John
Weaver, planned and oversaw the dance.
Over forty
years ago, when the LHPS Board of Trustees established this amazing college
prep school, one of the core principles was to inspire patriotism. In
support of this fundamental Lake Highland value, the 2011 Veterans Salute committee is busy planning a celebration
entitled “With Honor.” The
performances will take place on Friday, November 11th, at 8:45AM,
10:45 AM, and 1:00 PM.
Our commitment to this aspect of the mission is also
demonstrated through the Middle School Social Studies curriculum. We spend two
years studying American History, Civics, and Leadership. This past week, the work being done in both
seventh and eighth grade history classes was inspirational. In 7th
grade the students are selecting who will be the next American Revolution
Idol? Students in seventh grade American History are producing
music videos and interviews featuring important individuals during the American
Revolution. After research, writing, and recording their performance each
group will compete to be the 2011 LHPS American Revolution Idol! In the 8th
Grade, the students are using imaging, annotating, research, technology
and presentation skills to introduce cultural icons of the 1920s and the
influence of these individuals on the United States in the 1920s and beyond.
Honor Flight Spirit Day/ November 9th
- With
a donation towards Honor Flight on Wednesday, November 9th,
students in Middle School will receive a Spirit Day. Honor Flight’s sole purpose is to honor
American Veterans for all the sacrifices they’ve made on behalf of our country.
Honor Flight flies (primarily WWII veterans at this time) to Washington D.C. to
visit their memorial at absolutely no cost!
Seniority is given to the most senior Veterans and those that are
terminally ill. The Veterans are
accompanied by a well-trained staff of VOLUNTEERS and guardians that pay for
their own travel. 100% of your donation
goes to the mission of HONORING our Veterans.
Do you have an old, worn out American Flag that
you don't know how to properly dispose of? With the support of the Boy
Scouts and the American Legion, LHP will collect Unserviceable Flags
at this year's Veterans Salute. Look for the Unserviceable Flags
collection booth in front of the HCCA- at the end of the terrace in front of
the lobby along the railing backing up to the lake. All flags will be
retired in an official, dignified ceremony by the Scouts and the
Legion.

Speaking of the Upper School!
Fantastic
Debate Results:
LHPS debate is definitely enjoying one of its best years on record, and it’s
hard to beat past records. Last weekend the team traveled to Gainesville for
the Florida Blue Key Tournament, the Southeastern United States’ largest high
school speech and debate invitational, featuring over 1000 competitors from
over 100 teams across the nation. We unleashed our WMD (Weapons of Mass Discussion)
and placed 3rd at the prestigious national event. Seniors Rohan Agrawal and
Dana Shimkoski took first in their events. Freshman phenom, Chandler Watkins,
took 3rd of 320 students in Student Congress. Head coach George Clemens
believes this is the best performance of any freshman in the 28 year history of
the tournament.
Upper

Admission
Open Houses and Visitation Days Current LHPS families with prospective Highlanders for the
2012-2013 school year are encouraged to attend an Admission Open House/
Visitation Day. For younger siblings, it helps them to feel more
comfortable at testing if they have had an opportunity to visit the classrooms
and meet teachers prior to testing. For older siblings, it gives them an
opportunity to see the classrooms and learn about the Lake Highland experience
through their own eyes, not just hearing about it from their parents and
siblings. Lake Highland families are welcome to share this information with
friends that may be interested in applying to Lake Highland for the 2012-2013
school year.

Lake Highland Middle School Parents and Students,
Yesterday, we had our 7th grade coffee with over fifty parents in attendance. Thanks to Bob and Tammy Hopfenberg and Scott and Julie Skidelsky for hosting the event at the Orlando Country Club. It was a wonderful, fun social gathering for all in attendance.
As I walked around, weaving my way from one class to another this morning, one word came to mind….inspired. I am so inspired by the work of our students! Initially, I strolled upstairs to observe the Bridge Project. In Science, the eighth grade Bridge Project is designed to challenge both the student’s mechanical and creative abilities to create a bridge made out of specific materials which will exhibit the qualities of good structural engineering. The goal of the project is to design a bridge which will have the greatest structural strength in comparison to its own mass (strength to weight Ratio). I can’t wait to see the final construction! After Science, I strolled over to observe Mr. Driscoll’s Composition class. The students were in the midst of their Friday Spoken Word. The Spoken Word is when they volunteer to share their writings with the rest of the class. During the feedback aspect of the class, one eighth grade girl astutely commented by saying to the presenter; “I loved your use of similes and descriptive words.” While departing the classroom, I could only feel like I was listening to the Book Radio on my Sirius XM Channels. The presentation of the story was amazing! This is just a quick snapshot of the inspiring work being done by your amazing students!
Speaking of being inspired! During our weekly Wednesday Assembly this week, our students were presented with the service/leadership opportunities going on in the middle school through our work with the OURM (Orlando Union Rescue Mission) and our RISE (Reading Inspires Students Everywhere) club. I encourage our students to share with their parents the work that is being done with these organizations.
Next Thursday, September 29th, is a student holiday, as we will have our annual Middle School Parent/Teacher Conference Day for those parents who feel a need to meet with a specific teacher or team of teachers. These are optional conferences. Should you want a team conference please contact our Associate Director of Student Services, Paul Quick at (407)206-1900, or at pquick@lhps.org. For individual conferences please contact the specific teacher with whom you would like to meet.
Registration is now open for our annual Gina Martin Run, in honor of our late athletic trainer, Gina Martin, who lost her battle to Leukemia three years ago. Proceeds from the Gina Martin Run benefit the LHPS Booster Club/Tyler Martin Education Fund. We are challenging our coaches and student athletes, many of whom were greatly impacted by Gina Martin, to achieve 100% participation. The run is open to the community and registration can take place by going to https://www.signmeup.com/site/online-event-registration/78805.
We look forward to another great Gina Martin Run!

Middle School Parents and Students,
On Wednesday we had a school-wide spirit day to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project as a commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Your donation in support of their mission, to honor and empower wounded warriors, was greatly appreciated. LHPS raised over $5,800 for the Wounded Warrior Project!
The first BEAST event for this year will be on September 14th. BEAST stands for Bullying Ends As students Stand Together. Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America. The Rachel’s Challenge organization exists “to inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion.” We will have an in-school student assembly on Wednesday followed by an event for parents and students at 6:00 PM in the HCCA on the Bradshaw (Main) Campus.
We will be hosting our Middle School Grade Level Coffees in September! The agenda is to get our parents together for a relaxed fun social-time, paired with the opportunity to meet the school’s administrators to become informed about the specific grade level activities that will take place throughout the year. On Monday, the 8th grade coffee will be hosted by Charles and Michelle Carlton from 8:00 AM-10:30 AM at their home. The address is 1143 Preserve Point, Winter Park, 32789. Please rsvp at 8thgradecoffee@lhps.org. The 7th grade coffee will be hosted by Bob and Tammy Hopfenberg and Scott and Julie Skidelsky at the Orlando Country Club on September 22nd from 8:00 AM-10:30 AM. Please rsvp at 7thgradecoffee@lhps.org.

Thrifty-minded volunteers can take advantage of having first choice of some wonderful items like sweatshirts and jackets for the fall. Also, LHPA continues to collect any gently used uniforms, spirit shirts and outerwear for the upcoming sale. The yellow collection bins are located on the 1st floor of the lobby of the 940 building, the Lower School foyer, the front doors in car pool line of the Middle School, and outside the Upper School office. Middle School Parents and Students,
Monday, September 5th, Labor Day, is a school holiday. Also, Wednesday, September 7th, is a school-wide spirit day to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project as a commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Your donation in support of their mission, to honor and empower wounded warriors, is greatly appreciated.
What a great turnout we had for a Back to School Night on Tuesday! The teachers thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many parents. If you did not get a chance to come out on Tuesday, please remember that our teachers are always happy to hear from you if you have any questions or concerns. I would like to thank Debbie Mintzer, our LHPS President, and April Page, our Top of the Dome Chair and representative for the Annual Fund for their participation on Tuesday night.
I would also like to thank Allison Delgado, our Middle School Media and Technology Coordinator, for her review of the Technology Covenant. No matter how mature, how well informed, or how compliant the child, the stakes are just too high. Any error in judgment could result in long-term negative consequences. So, for now, we must remove the risk of unsupervised Internet access until our kids get a little more experience under their belts. Once again Allison’s three takeaways were:
- Collect cell phones in the evening to charge & secure.
- Keep web-enabled computers in common areas of the home, and collect or disable them at night.
- Use parental controls to manage apps, disable Safari, and install a safe browser on student cell phones.
For instructions on how to set restrictions on your child’s phones and computers just click on this link. If you have any questions, please contact Allison at adelagado@lhps.org.
In support of our efforts to ensure that our students are developing positive leadership skills in the community and also through the students’ everyday interaction with one another, we had our kickoff event for the BEAST Bully Prevention Program on Wednesday. BEAST stands for Bullying Ends As students Stand Together. The Olweus program, from which we developed the BEAST concept, is the most researched and best-known bullying prevention program available today. It addresses three roles children can identify with in the mistreatment of others: bullies, victims, or bystanders. A significant aspect of this program is to arm the bystanders with skills to positively impact a situation. As a result of arming the bystanders with the needed education and support, we are hoping to cultivate their character to assume leadership roles to impact the culture of our middle school in the classroom, hallways, and on the playing fields. The goals of the program are
- to reduce existing bullying problems among students
- to prevent the development of new bullying problems
- to achieve better peer relations at school
Throughout the year we will continue to plan and implement activities to create a culture that will shape our students’ character and values. Below is the presentation that was led by our BEAST coordinator Mr. Driscoll.
The first BEAST event for this year will be on September 14th as we have a special in-school assembly followed by an event for parents at 6:00 PM in the HCCA on the Bradshaw (Main) Campus. Rachel’s Challenge exists to stand alongside education professionals at every level to inspire, equip and empower students from K-12 to make a positive difference in their world. It is a powerful partnership that can replace bullying and violent behavior on school campuses with kindness and compassion so students can learn more in a safer, more respectful environment.
The evening session is similar to the assembly program and ends with a specific challenge to parents, showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making.
You may have heard that yesterday we conducted a school-wide lockdown drill. Within minutes, we were able to account for all students and classes resumed. This type of drill allows us to be proactive in keeping your children safe.
You are invited to a casual gathering for anyone interested in learning how we meet weekly to pray for our students, faculty, and administration. We will meet on Wednesday, September 7th, from 8:15 a.m. – 9:30 a.m., in the Boardroom behind the Lakefront Room. If you have any questions, please contact Pam Reiman at 407-625-2494.
We’re WILD about Sally Foster! Thank you for your support of the Sally Foster fundraiser! Please turn in any remaining order forms THIS WEEK.
Go Green by donating Tartan! LHPA is collecting gently used uniforms, spirit day shirts, and outerwear for the upcoming sale on September 29th. Dear Middle School Parents,
The 7th Grade trip to Camp Wewa was a huge success again this year! Our teacher chaperones were outstanding examples of positive energy and enthusiasm. A special thanks to Sandy Hevner, our Associate Director. As a result of her hard work and commitment to our students, Camp Wewa has become an integral part of the LHPS Middle School experience.
I will not be sending a Friday email again this week, as I will be driving my boys off to college in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. My son Christian will be starting his freshman year at the University of Scranton and DJ will be in his senior year at Wesleyan University. Wow…how the time flies!
Yesterday was a big day in the middle school as we rolled out the Student Covenant to Use Technology Safely and Responsibly during our weekly assembly. The students should have brought home the Highlander Family Values. Students are asked to initial each document listed below to indicate that they have read and will comply with each.
l A Highlander Family Values
l MS Handbook (includes Highlander Honor Code on page 3, and Bullying Guidelines on pages 20-21)
l Student Covenant to Use Technology Safely and Responsibly (includes Technology Code of Ethics)
The Highlander Family Values statement sheets are due back on Friday with the student’s initials and a parent signature indicating that they have read and discussed these statements. We will following up yesterday’s assembly with a Cyber Safety speaker from the FBI later this morning. In order for students to have access to technology on the middle school campus parents and students must have signed the Highlander Family Values. The Highlander Family Values and Covenant are posted on the middle school website.
In coordination with the Highlander Family Values, the Middle School will be having a B.E.A.S.T (Bullying Ends As students Stand Together) Spirit Day next Wednesday as we educate the students about the B.E.A.ST program. Eighth Grade students already have B.E.A.S.T shirts. New 8th graders and all seventh graders will receive their B.E.A.S.T shirts next Tuesday.
Tuesday, August 30th, is our Back to School Night for middle school parents on the Charles Clayton Campus. Upon arrival, please stop by the cafeteria and pick up your child’s updated schedule and then join us in The Bourne Family Chapel at 6:00 PM. Following our gathering in the chapel, the parents will be dismissed to follow their child’s daily schedule and meet all of their teachers. The evening should conclude about 8:30 PM. Also, due to limited parking on the Charles Clayton Middle School Campus, a shuttle service will be available for our parents who wish to park on the main campus. The shuttle will be based in front of the Gymnasium on the main campus, beginning at 5:15 PM and will run through 8:45 PM. If you choose to park in the neighborhood around or near the Charles Clayton Middle School Campus, please be respectful of the neighbors’ property. Also, please do not park in the parking lot south of Woodward Street that is used for the Colonial Drive businesses. Middle School Football practice will end at 4:30 PM and Cheerleaders will not practice on Tuesday, August 30th.

Tuesday, August 30th, is our Middle School Back to School Night. The evening begins in the Bourne Family Chapel at the Charles Clayton Campus at 6:00 PM. Following our gathering in the chapel, the parents will be dismissed to meet all of their child’s teachers. The evening should conclude about 8:15 PM.
Just a few beginning of the year reminders from the Security and Transportation Office:
- Cell phone use while driving on campus is unacceptable and prohibited. The safety of our children requires your undivided attention.
- Don't forget to wear your parent ID Badge on campus. If you forget, get a temporary badge from Security in the Middle School Office.
- Observe speed limits and traffic signs in the neighborhood. We have an increased number of students who are "walkers," and we want to be respectful of our neighbors. OPD gives parking and speeding tickets periodically in the neighborhood.

Important Facts and Reminders for Students:
· Students who want to participate in the water activities must bring appropriate swim wear attire to school on Friday, August 12th. (This includes a wrap, T Shirt covering, or a rash guard for the girls) Please remember to bring a towel.
· Students should bring flip flops or water shoes to wear on the field for water activities.
· Please bring dry clothes and athletic shoes if you want to participate in gym activities and the video game truck. There will be additional activities for those who do not want to participate in water activities.
· Snacks and water will be provided during the event.
· Teacher chaperones will be supervising all activities throughout the event.
Physical Education or Dance students will not need to “dress out” the first day of class. Beginning Monday, August 15, students will need black jazz pants, black jazz shoes (preferably slip-on, not lace-up), and any color leotard for Dance class.
1st period dance class will meet at 7:55 AM in A126. The Dance Studio is located in the Annex building (across from the Upper School campus, where the Business Office is also located). Band, Musical Theater, and Strings students will also start their day on the Bradshaw Campus in the bottom floor of the Rex Building. The shuttle will return dance, band, and Musical Theater students to the Charles Clayton Campus for 2nd period.
Transportation, Carpool, and Shuttles
A vital part of making it a smooth and safe process is the use of signs on the dashboards of the cars. These signs have been handed out during the Middle School Open House. Please place the sign on the dashboard on the side closest to the traffic person calling the names.
After loading, please turn over your carpool sign and leave it in the front window. This signals the traffic personnel that you have loaded and are ready to move.
.
- Middle School students who are carpooling with Lower School families must arrive on time to the Lower School for pick up. Names of older students are not always called, so they need to pay attention. If you have a MS student in your Lower School carpool, you may want to arrive later to give time for the shuttles to arrive from MS and for the walk to LS. The traffic line cannot be held for a late MS/US student.
- Please discuss with your child the importance of good behavior while riding the shuttles and waiting to be picked up and the importance of listening for names to be called.
- Cell phone use is absolutely forbidden for any reason during drop off and pick up. This is a vital safety issue and violators will be reported to Security and the Office of the President.

Important! If you have not done so, once a year, we require our parents to answer a few medical questions for each of their children attending LHPS for the upcoming school year. It only takes a few minutes and it is imperative that we have this information as soon as possible before the start of school. To access the medical health form, login to PowerSchool at https://pso.lhps.org. Select one of your children and then click on the Medical Health Form icon at the top of the page. Please answer all questions thoroughly and click submit at the bottom of the page. Be sure to submit a separate Medical Health Form for each of your children attending next year.
REMINDER TO PARENTS OF STUDENTS ENTERING 7TH GRADE:
The Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services require that any child entering the Seventh Grade show proof of the following, or a temporary or permanent exemption:
Completed and signed DH680 Form (Florida Certificate of Immunization) which will include the following:
Complete DTP series
Complete Polio series
Two MMR immunizations
Complete Hepatitis B series
One Tetanus Booster
Varicella immunization or date of disease
LHPS must have received documentation that your child has met all immunization and health requirements before we can allow your child to enter school August 10.
If your child cannot be fully immunized for religious reasons, you must visit an HRS County Public Health Unit to be advised of the risks of not receiving the immunizations. They will give you an HD681 Form which will need to be kept on file at school with your child’s LHPS records.
If you have questions regarding this, please feel free to call Mrs. Leslie Macaulay in the Middle School Office at 407.206.1900 ext. 2001.
A first draft of your student’s schedules was sent out last month. Lake Highland Middle School Parents and Students
It was a busy week for our Lake Highland family with commencement and baccalaureate ceremonies for the Class of 2011. (I am proud to share that my third and youngest child, Christian, graduated from LHPS on Saturday and will be heading off to the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania this fall). Our 7th graders completed their semester exams yesterday. Last week our 8th graders completed final exams in Math and Foreign Language Exams prior to presenting the May’n Event lessons on Tuesday. The May’n Event offered the students’ components which are key to intellectual competence and confidence, and helped the students form a strong foundation in creativity, problem-solving and innovation necessary in the 21st Century.
Wow! What an outstanding year of achievement, growth, and progress in the middle school at LHPS. It has been a joy to watch our seventh grade students and the growth that they have shown throughout the year. The Charles Clayton Campus will be in excellent hands next year under their leadership. Congratulations to our 8th grade students on the completion of middle school. The class of 2015’s commitment to academics, athletics, the arts, and friendship will have a remarkable influence on the LHPS Upper School over the next four years. The LHPS Middle School celebrates and appreciates each of you. You are loved!
I would like to publicly offer a special thank you to Mrs. Hevner, Dean Borcky, Mr. Quick and the middle school teachers and staff. I have never met a more dedicated, committed group of educators! They amaze me each and every day and I am blessed to be in their presence!
Final Middle School Report Cards for the 2010-2011 school year should be posted to Power School by the middle of next week and are scheduled to be mailed on June 3rd.
E-Textbooks: This coming school year 2011-2012 the Middle School will offer families the opportunity to order electronic textbooks. The MS textbook Store will be open June 6th- 19th. Parents must make their choices by June 19th. To make textbook choices please go to LHPS website and do the following:
1. Go to Parents
2. Scroll down to School Store
3. Click on Textbook Store
4. Click on Middle School Online Textbook Store (mid page)
5. Click on individual courses to make choices.
With technology development accelerating, the use of computers, laptops, tablets, personal devices, smartphones for teaching and learning is creating many new ways to optimize student learning. We are beginning this with the Middle School which is only two grades so that we can ensure that we have the resources, systems and logistics properly in place for success. The “E-Textbooks” are accessed via a student password. Students can use their e-textbook for one school year from any location; it is not a downloadable text that will be housed on their computer. This does not mean that students need to bring a laptop or other device to school. Each classroom teacher will have a classroom set of hardcopy textbooks and/or netbooks for use in the classroom. Whereas before a student carried a textbook to class and home for reading and homework, now students will have the option to use their e-textbook at home. Class use of the textbook will be done with the hard copy set in each classroom, netbooks, or, as the teacher sees fit, using the classroom Smartboard and e-textbook site. Many of our students are already familiar with this online textbook format because many of their math, science, and social studies textbooks have included a password access to an e-textbook or resource website already. LHPS is poised and ready to usher its education into the 21st century and the tools inherent to this new generation of learners.
FAQs About E-Textbook Use and Purchase
1. May I order both the hard copy and e-textbook? Yes, in fact many textbook prices now include the use of the e-textbook.
2. May I order the e-text book only? Yes, and that option is considerably cheaper for most but not all publishers.
3. May I order an e-text book for one class and a hard copy for another class? Yes, the choice is yours for each class unless a teacher has dictated the choice in a certain course.
4. What if my child changes classes? Can I get a password for the e-text for his new class? The teachers will be warning students NOT to use their password until they are certain they will be remaining in that class. At this time, passwords are nonrefundable.
5. What if I miss the deadline for ordering textbooks or I forget to order? The default for any family that does not order is they will receive the hardcopy and e-textbook package option.
6. How do I know if my child will learn effectively using an e-textbook? That is not something we can answer for every child since they are all different learners. The best advice we can give at this point in the evolution of computers and digital content is to observe them as they work at home, monitor their success and productivity.
7. What if I find my child needs a hard copy after we have purchased the e-textbook? Mrs. Debbie Saul, our textbook manager, can order hardcopies after school has begun if necessary.
Summer Reading 2011
Seventh Grade
The students will be reading a total of two books. These books may be purchased at your local bookstores, amazon.com and/or through the use of E-books.
Book Assignment #1: Choose one novel from the book series listed below and be prepared to “tweet” with your classmates on Moodle. This assignment will be completed in English class during the first week of school.
Anderson, Laurie Halse. 1. Chains 2. Forge
Brewer, Heather. 1. Eigth Grade Bites 2. Ninth Grade Slays 3. Tenth Grade Bleeds 4. Eleventh Grade Burns
Dashner, James. 1. The Maze Runner 2. The Scorch Trials
Westerfield, Scott. 1. Leviathan 2. Behemoth
Westerfield, Scott 1. Uglies 2. Pretties 3. Specials 4. Extras
We strongly recommend both students and parents visit the website www.commonsense.org to get further information about these books listed above. This website contains reader reviews from both students’ and adults’ perspectives.
Book Assignment #2: Choose a book of your choice, of at least 150 pages. Students may want to choose the sequel to the book that you have read for assignment #1. Once the book is completed the students will design a book mosaic. The students need to use creativity skills to design a mosaic of ideas, quotes, thoughts, etc. about the book. The mosaic will contain at least 16 tiles. Students may use technological skills to create the mosaic, or they may use personal artistic abilities and design the mosaic with paper, glue, magazine clippings, etc. Click here for the mosaic outline design.

Eighth Grade
Book One: All rising 8th grade students will read Countdown, by Deborah Wiles.
Book One Assignment: Upon returning to school, the students will be working on a cross-curricular project surrounding the book. The project will involve the student’s English and history classes.
Book Two: All rising 8th grade students will read a book of their choosing. The book can be from any genre, but the book must be 150 pages or more in length. Further, the book should be at or above the student’s reading level.
Book Two Assignment: Upon returning to school, the student will be given a choice to complete one of two assignments. First, the student could choose to deliver a book talk to his or her class. The book talk examines the strengths and weaknesses of the book and makes a recommendation. Second, the student could choose to create a video trailer for the book. The video trailer promotes interest in the book by creating excitement and highlighting the book’s qualities. The assignments will be handed out when the students return to school in August.
This spring the 7th grade English classes entered their original poems into a national poetry contest for grades 7 and 8. This contest accepts less than 50% of entries submitted, and Lake Highland had 47 7th graders chosen to be published! Since Lake Highland had so many of its 7th graders selected, the school was awarded the Poetic Achievement Award, which is given to the top 10% of schools nationwide, who had students enter the contest. This award means that the school will be recognized in the front pages of the poem anthology published as well as qualify the school for a language arts grant.
The following students who were selected to be published will now be eligible to be selected as one of the Top Ten Poets in the national contest with a chance to win over $2,000 in prizes. Congratulations to all of the 7th grade students whose poems were selected to be published in the 2011 Creative Communications poetry contest!
