LOWER SCHOOL WEEKLY NOTES

May 18, 2012

Dear Lower School Parents,

Anticipation for summer vacation grows as the school year winds down!  The LHPA sponsored a very successful book sale earlier in the week; all students had the opportunity to choose books to enjoy during the summer. Thank you to parents Liesl Kolb and Dawn Roy for organizing and hosting the sale. The Lower School summer reading lists for students entering PreK – 6th are posted on the LHPS website. (Just click the Summer Reading button on the home page.) Reading is an important lifelong pursuit and we appreciate every parent’s support of the school’s effort to encourage summertime reading.

Math spirals for review have been sent home with children in 1st and 2nd grades; the completed booklets are due on the first day of school.  Access to ALEKS will continue during the summer for students in grades 3 – 6 and specific summer expectations for your child's grade level will be included in the end-of-school mailing. The adaptive structure of ALEKS provides review as well as introductions to new concepts and skills.

Please note the following reminders and items of interest.  For more detailed school-wide announcements and calendar items, please also check the Week at a Glance on the LHPS website at http://www.lhps.org/lhps/Portals/0/announcements/waag/waag.pdf.

Dress Code for Next Week

Monday, May 21st through Thursday, May 24th are regular dress days. Only Friday, May 25th, the last day of school, is a Spirit Day.

End-of-Year Treats

On the last day of school, Friday, May 25th, (Thursday, May 24th for Kindergarten), we will have ice cream treats for each child. Please do not send in special treats during the last week of school. There are no end-of-the-year parties with the exception of PreK.

Medications in Clinic

If you have supplied the clinic with medication of any kind for your child, the clinic has tried to call you to make arrangements to have the medication returned to you by the last day of school. Any medication left in the clinic after Friday, May 25th, will be discarded.

Aftercare Notices

On Wednesday, May 23rd, Aftercare will not be open to drop-ins.  Only regular, registered Aftercare participants may attend regular Aftercare on that day.  We will provide a separate supervised area for any students who are not registered Aftercare participants and need to stay past that day's early dismissal time.

Aftercare is still open until 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week.  It  just starts two hours earlier because of early dismissal.

Used Book Procedures/Purchase of Used Books

Used books will be accepted in your child’s homeroom May 21st – May 25th, and from May 29th- May 30th in the Lower School Office. To receive credit, the book must be in good condition and your child’s first and last names must be written on the inside of the front cover of the textbook.  Credit for books will appear on your LHPS student account in June 2012.  Books dropped off that are not acceptable for credit will be donated to the teachers for classroom sets.

LHPS will sell Lower School used books to students and parents entering grades 3 – 6, first-come first-served, on Lower School Orientation Day, Tuesday, August 14th.  Parents will be invoiced for used books on the September student billing statement due in October.

Used Uniform Collection

ALL SUMMER LONG!  Have your kids outgrown their uniforms, spirit shirts, and outerwear?  Are your kids graduating from LHP and you’re not sure what to do with all the clothes?  Please drop off your used uniforms, spirit shirts, and outerwear to one of the four yellow bins around campus. The bins are located in the Lower School foyer, outside the Upper School Office, at the 940/Annex Building, and near the carpool lane at the Middle School. The bins will remain on campus throughout the summer for your convenience.  If you have any questions, please contact Jenn Buck at psycob1@gmail.com.

Medical Health Forms & Demographic Information

Once a year, we require our parents to answer a few medical questions for each of their children attending LHPS for the upcoming school year.  It only takes a few minutes and it is imperative that we have this information by July 27th.  To access the medical health form, login to PowerSchool at  https://pso.lhps.org.  Select one of your children and then click on the Medical Health Form icon in the menu at the left side of the page.  Please review the information we have on file for your child to make sure the data is correct.  If the information we currently have on file is complete and accurate, check the box at the top of the page, type the name of the person submitting the form, enter the date of submittal, and click the submit button at the bottom of the page.  If the information we currently have on file is NOT complete and accurate, make the needed changes and answer all questions thoroughly in the boxes provided in the right hand column, type the name of the person submitting the form, enter the date of submittal, and click the submit button at the bottom of the page.  You must submit a separate Medical Health Form for EACH of your children attending next year.

This would also be a good time to review the demographic information we have on file for your children by clicking on the Demographic Change icon.  If any of the information we have on file is incorrect, please make the necessary changes and click submit at the bottom of each page.  You may add or delete information, add additional emergency contacts, or add a comment or explanation for us.  The information we receive from you will be used to update our records.  The phone numbers, mailing and email addresses you provide prior to July 27th will be published in the LHPS Handbook and School Directory.

If you have any questions regarding your PowerSchool login or these forms, please contact Erica Bolstein at 407-206-1900, ext. 3490, or Joan Kettlehut at ext. 3323.

Spartan Lacrosse Camp

Over the summer, there is an opportunity for your 3rd – 8th grade son to work with some of the top players from Florida. The Spartan Lacrosse Camp is holding its Annual Summer Lax Camp which features two sessions, on June 4-6 and now a one-day at Showalter Field behind Ward Park and Showalter Stadium.  If you would like more information and the registration form to fill out, send alum Will Rotatori an email at allstarwill51@aol.com. We hope your son wants to learn more about "the fastest game on two feet!”

Summer Spectacular

Although early registration has ended, there are still a few classes available.  Visit

www.lhps.org and select the Summer Spectacular button located on the homepage.

Academies

Thank you for another great year of after-school academies. The enriching activities enjoyed by so many of our children reflected our mission to prepare students for the love of lifelong learning. Academy information for Fall 2012 will be online in late July, so watch the Lake Highland website for academy descriptions and registration.

We hope you have a great weekend!
