Mr. Eschbach’s Office Hours
Upper level science courses are difficult application courses and students may need one on one assistance at times. I make myself available for students throughout the day. I strongly encourage students to set an appointment. Walk ins are allowed but the hours are limited. I am available for tutoring, makeup assignments, and student concerns by appointment only during these times:
Monday
through Friday
During
3rd or 8th period
During
Fling
During
second lunch
and
after school from
Walk in tutoring is available
after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:15 until
Any student that is coming
for tutoring must have their updated notebook, a pencil or pen, and must have
questions prepared to ask. In the past students have come for tutoring with no
notebook, or book, or current notes. Tutoring is for the student who needs
extra help after he or she has already attempted the work.
Study Skills Web Site- We all could use some improvement in our study skills and
time management skills. Here is your opportunity. www.lhps.org/academics/upper
level/study skills tips. Ask
me about it in class.

Honors Biology
We will dissect several specimens during the last few weeks of school. No organisms were killed for the purpose of dissection. Fetal pigs, cow eyes, and sheep hearts may be dissected. They are waste products from the meat industry that usually end up as meat by products often found in pet foods. The organisms will be treated with respect and the experience will give your child insight of the various organ systems within animals. They get to examine and appreciate the complexity and wonder of life. I understand that some students resist the dissection section but it is an integral , comprehensive activity that should be experienced by all students. Please let me know if there is a significant reason for excusing your child from this unit (in the form of a letter expressing the reason, your signature and child’s name.) If sensitivity is an issue, I will try to buddy up your child with a student that will do most of the actual dissections. Thanks , Mr. Eschbach

Marine Biology Independent Projects
The oceans are so vast that
the body of knowledge regarding them is enormous even though marine biology and
oceanography are relatively new disciplines. The course is designed to explore
some topics in great depth yet only survey over others. It is also very foreign
to terrestrial humans unless we immerse ourselves in the biome. The independent
project component of this course is designed to alleviate these short falls in
the curriculum. Students can commit their time and energy to study their own
specific areas of interest. It is a required part of the honors curriculum and
optional to the college prep course. All Honors students must complete at least
one major independent project per quarter (if not 10% points will be deducted
from the point tally for that quarter). Students may find themselves behind on
their point tallies and can use the independent projects points to supplement
their score.
Only one independent project
can be turned in per week and none are accepted during the week of finals.
Don’t procrastinate or your grade will suffer. All independent projects must
get prior approval by filling out and submitting a contract. Contracts need to
be discussed during office hours or at the end of class. All contract forms must be complete,
thorough, and neat. If they need correction, you will get a substantial point
reduction. Keep in mind, it is a contract.
Major Independent Projects (sufficient for the Honors Requirement)
Must contain at least 8 hours of total time
Must have at least 4 hours on site
Must have a presentation format , i.e. power point, poster, scrapbook, etc
Environmental stewardship is an important aspect but not
required
Teaching, sharing aspects of the oceans with others in
society is desired
Examples may include
Visit and study at Tampa Aquarium
and research a specific topic /poster
Teaching a classmate surfing off
FL coast and waves generated by hurricane/Power point
SCUBA adventure in the Keys comparing fishes found
on the reef at various times of day/ video or power point
Marine Environmental Stewardships
Turtle projects, Dune Project Sea Oats,
Coastal bird Project, Beach cleanups, Manatee Watch
Too busy for Fishing, you’re just too busy –
take an elderly group or handicapped
fishing
Discovery Cove Trainer Internships
Time to get Active
As a young new voter , you have a lot of
clout. As a young purchaser with the most expendable money than any other
demographic, you have a lot of clout. Become
a marine animal advocate. Educate the public. Get corporations to change their
policies.
Melting of polar
caps?
Whale slaughter? Fur
Seals?
Killer Whales in
captivity?
Energy from the Sea?
Coastal oil Drilling?
Minor Independent
Projects
These will not be substantial enough to qualify for the Honors Projects but they do earn points for the quarter
Senior lunch Sushi bar adventure/ poetry or poster
Video on Surfing / critique on the movie
Book related to the ocean/ report

Fieldtrip Contract or Independent Project Contract
Adult supervision will occur at the fieldtrip sites. Transportation may or may not be supervised.. Many of the off campus, independent experiences will happen when the instructor is not present. The parent/ guardian and their child must confirm and establish a level of supervision which they deem adequate for the safety and well being of their child for all independent projects.
