Middle School Parents and Students,

Noted thriller author Robert Liparulo visited Lake Highland Preparatory School to promote the study of history through the eyes of fiction. Liparulo’s new young adult series Dreamhouse Kings turns the study of history into an epic thriller just as the recent blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull demonstrated how adventure stories make the study of history and archeology come alive in a young person’s imagination. The Dreamhouse series tells the story of the King family who move into an old Victorian home in the forests of Northern California. The home turns out to be a portal to history. The family discovers that the past is not really past.

Liparulo talked to teachers and students about the importance of history and how fiction can help make it come alive to a new generation of students. Publisher Thomas Nelson left the school with a classroom set of autographed copies of Liparulo’s books.

As a reminder, students can submit ideas for his future books www.robertliparulo.com and win prizes if their ideas are selected.

Middle School Parents and Students,

A few weeks ago, I wrote about some of the excitement generated in each of the classes at LHPS. In the middle school at LHPS, we also take great pride in enhancing student learning by offering enriching programs through assemblies, clubs, and extracurricular activities.  An example of this will take place on Thursday, October 23rd, as we host Robert Liparulo, author of the bestselling young adult series Dreamhouse Kings, to our LHPS Middle School on the Charles Clayton Campus.  Through the Dreamhouse Kings series Robert Liperulo teaches the value of history, the importance of purpose, and the power of family through adventure and suspense. We look forward to his visit next week!

Finally, in the middle school at LHPS, we are increasing concerned how advances in technology can be a great tool for our students, but also can be dangerous if not thoughtfully used.  As a resource for our families we have provided an abundance of information on our school website at http://www.lhps.org/db_pages/db_page1.asp?Page=07.  This information can be very helpful for parents who may have concerns regarding technology as it relates to the social and intellectual development of our students.

Middle School Parents and Students,

I hope you all had a wonderful Fall Break weekend. Welcome back!

The end of the first grading period was October 8th.  First Quarter grades will be posted to Parent Connect on Wednesday, October 15th. We will not be mailing report cards home this term. We send home a paper copy at the end of each semester.

Tuesday, October 14th, is a college t-shirt day. This day is simply an opportunity for middle school students to come dressed in a college t-shirt of their choice.  They may also wear denim.  As a reminder, all denim wear must be in good repair, bearing no signs of excessive wear, such as holes, patches, or frayed ends.  Additionally, shirts must be tucked in and belts should be worn as well.  We are asking that students who wear a college t-shirt donate $1.00. The money collected goes to fund numerous student council activities.

Today during Mentor Period, Chris Crowley, District Executive for the Boy Scout Council, spoke to our middle school boys about participation in Troop 148, the Boy Scout troop sponsored by Lake Highland. One month ago, four young men from our troop achieved scouting’s highest honor when they became Eagle Scouts.  With such success also comes the challenge of recruiting new boys to take the place of those who are nearing the end of their scouting careers.  To follow up on today’s presentation; Troop 148 will host a Scout Night recruitment meeting for parents and boys at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, October 14th in the Lakefront Room on the LHPS Main Campus. As Lake Highland’s troop grows in numbers, so too will the boys who help to make it happen grow in stature and character.

LHPS Middle School Parents and Students,

This week, as I made my travels through the LHPS middle school, I couldn’t help but observe the excellence in teaching that is taking place in each of the classrooms. For example, in seventh grade Latin, I observed students acting out one of three skits from Stage 3:  “Tonsor” (the Barber),“Pictor” (the  painter), and “Venalicius (a slave dealer).

The students were fabulous!  In Science, the eighth grade Bridge Project is designed to challenge both the student’s mechanical and creative abilities to create a bridge made out of specific materials which will exhibit the qualities of good structural engineering.  The goal of the project is to design a bridge which will have the greatest structural strength in comparison to its own mass (Strength to Weight Ratio).  I could go on and on and share with you the academic brilliance occurring each day, each class period, in each subject! If you have a few minutes, take a stroll through our teachers’ web pages to examine the skills being taught and applied to activities which bring about intellectual development.  Learning is also taking place outside the classroom! Last evening, our middle school football team, made up of sixty-six LHPS boys, learned one of life’s greatest lessons. That is, even if you give your best effort, the ball does not always bounce your way. Regardless of the outcome, the young men were great sportsmen and lost a hard fought contest with dignity and class.  We are aiming high, expecting much, and our students are thriving!

Our Fall Break will begin on Thursday, October 9th through Friday, October 10th. School will resume on Monday, October 13th. We hope your family will have the opportunity to enjoy a nice fall activity.

The end of the first grading period is Wednesday, October 8th.  First Quarter grades will be posted to Parent Connect on Wednesday, October 15th. We will not be mailing report cards home this term. We send home a paper copy at the end of each semester.

The 7th Grade Overnight Field Trip is November 6-7, 2008. Final permission forms to Mote Marine Laboratory & Busch Gardens Extravaganza will be arriving home early next week. Please be sure to fill out the forms completely, and your child needs to return them to their science teacher by October 15th. Parent chaperones have been randomly chosen. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to be a chaperone for the trip.  Those whose names were drawn have been notified.

The Middle School will present the Gilbert and Sullivan musical “Pirates of Penzance,” Thursday, October 30th, and November 1st, at 7:00 PM, in the Harriett Coleman Center for the Arts.  A total of 37 middle school students will present this lively comedy for the first time on the beautiful stage of our new facility. Set on the Rocky Coastline of Cornwall, England, The show parodies British Society of the 1800’s as well as the overwhelming sense of British duty and loyalty to Queen Victoria.  The show, which has a one-hour run time, is a rollicking, high energy and fun presentation. Tickets are $10 and may be reserved at tickets@lhps.org. They will also be available at the box office the night of the show.

As a reminder, if your family plans to travel while school is in session and your child must miss school, a Pre-Excused Absence form must be obtained from Mrs. Swope in the M.S. Office at least one week in advance. I would like to reiterate that when a student is absent they are missing valuable class lectures and assignments.  Travel should not be scheduled during Final Exam Weeks in December and May.  Please check dates before you make reservations.

A new wrestling club is being established at LHPS.  Practice will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 – 7:30 PM and will be affiliated with the Florida Jets Wrestling Club.  Registration begins October 7th.  Location: Toohey Wrestling Hut (next to the tennis courts at the O’Meara Complex). For more information about registration and fees contact Coach Palazzo at 407-492-4067, IUPalazzo@mac.com or Ernie Petrone at sabre3639@aol.com or 407-227-3642.

Middle School Parents and Students,

This was another action-packed week in the middle school on the Charles Clayton Campus. The Homecoming dance was a huge success with over 300 middle school students attending the event. In Assembly this week, we had a performance by Team Impact.  Team Impact reaches into the heartbeat of a community through effective school assemblies that motivate young people to make the right choices for a successful future.  Beyond the breaking of the baseball bat, the ripping of the phone book in half, and the bending of the steel bar, the highlight of the performance occurred when they discussed with our young ladies and gentleman the impact of planting negative seeds when it come to the decision-making process and their responsibilities when it come to objectification of women.

As a follow up, our LHPS Fellowship of Christian Athletes invites friends and families to attend Team Impact Night. They will be meeting at 6:00 PM, at Aloma Baptist Church, for the LHP-FCA - TAILGATE PIZZA PARTY. Meet at the LHP Tent on the South Side of Aloma Baptist Church.

Middle School Parents and Students,

We have had a tremendously busy week which will flow into an exciting week ahead for the middle school at LHPS.

On Thursday, we had an outstanding assembly for our middle school students.  Chap Clark, an Associate Professor of Youth, Family, and Culture, and Director of Youth Ministry Programs at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, talked to our students about healthy, loving relationships.  Ask your child how they like their green beans now!  Also, last night our middle school football players and cheerleaders outlasted two weather related delays in the football game to outscore TFA 28-10 to raise their record to 2-0.  Congratulations boys and girls! Tonight’s Varsity Football team is competing against Pine Castle Christian. It is NOT a Lake Highland home game though it is being played on Holloway Field at the LHPS main campus. **No Lake Highland Student, Teacher or Booster IDs will be accepted. Admission is $5.00- please come prepared to pay admission because this is classified as a Pine Castle home game.

Believe it or not, the first nine weeks grading period is half way over!  Please take a few minutes to log onto ParentConnect and check your child's grades to this point.  There is a mid-term grade posted under grades.  That is a snapshot of grades through 9/10/08.  Or you can click on assignments and then class scores to get the most up to date grades.  These are not permanent grades, but give you an idea of how your child is doing to this point.

The middle school picture day is Monday, September 15th.  Forms have been given to the students in their English classes.  Students should bring the completed forms with them on September 15th.  Please ask your students for the forms.  They may be somewhere in the backpack if you have not seen them prior to today.

Homecoming Week is next week with many events scheduled, including the Homecoming Court presentation, the Homecoming Parade, and the Homecoming Game.

Wednesday, September 17th, at 6:30 PM is the Homecoming parade down Highland Avenue and Marks Street. All families are welcome!  The parade will be followed by the senior class vs. junior class Wacky Greek Games.

.

Thursday:  Thursday will be a Super Hero spirit day.  Students may wear a t-shirt with your favorite Super Hero and jeans.  Please do NOT wear any costumes. On Friday, students will have a Spirit Day.  They will wear their Homecoming t-shirts which will be given to them on Thursday.

Friday:  The Student Council will be hosting a cookout during lunch.  Students may use their lunch tickets, charge it to your account or bring their own lunch.  After the cookout the students will be bussed over to the main campus for the Pep Rally. The students will return to the Charles Clayton Campus in plenty of time for our afternoon carpool.

Homecoming BBQ Tickets are on sale now: Join us Friday, September 19th from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM in the LHPS Cafeteria prior to the game. Dinner will be served by Sonny’s BBQ.  Adult dinners are $10 and dinners for children under the 4th grade will be $5. Ticket sales end September 17th.  No sales at the door. Go online to the LHPS website to order your tickets or charge to your student account. Call Sarah Hanson at 407 206 1900 ext. 3342 if you have any questions. The Middle School Homecoming Dance is Saturday, September 20th, at the Charles Clayton Campus Gymnasium, from 7:00 PM- 9:30 PM.  If you would like to volunteer to help decorate and chaperone the dance please contact Marta Kitograd at marta@cfl.rr.com. Decorating will begin on Friday at 2:00 PM and we might need to finish on Saturday. The dress for the dance is party attire.
