Be part of one or both exciting Mission trips to Costa Rica in 2009 where you will have the privilege to serve and help people.  We will be traveling to the town of Tamarindo which is in the pacific region of Costa Rica.  Our group will visit local schools and work with children of different ages.  We will be working in a classroom setting with a Space Science and P.E. curriculum. We will meet and interact with families in the village.  There will also be plenty of time to explore the mountain area and go horseback riding.  If you like the water there is world class surfing, swimming, sunset sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking to enjoy.  This is a beautiful country with beautiful people that are very appreciative of the educational assistance and fellowship you will bring to the children and teachers a Costa Rican school.

 Our Mission:

  • Our goals on this mission trip will encompass our school mission:
    • Serving the Costa Rican people “In an atmosphere of love, concern, and mutual respect”
    • “Instilling Christian values” with our student/faculty team
    • “Developing future leaders” with our students
    • “Preparing students for college and lifetime learning…”

How our Mission will be Accomplished:

  • Spending the week days working with the children in the Costa Rica school system in Tamarindo
    • Providing and participating in arts and crafts, academic assistance and recreational games.
    • Emerse the children of Costa Rica in conversational English.
  • Our students will experience emersion into the Spanish Language and Cost Rican Culture.
  • Participate in a town improvement project in the town of Tamarindo.
  • Enjoy and develop a great relationships with fellow LHP students, parents and faculty.

Our Missionary Guides are Pastor Bill and wife Janie Crofton with “Mission517”:

We are privileged to have this son and father team leading us. They are coordinating all the plans for our trip. This is their ministry that they have developed. They have the relationships in the community of Tamarindo through the schools system and have been going for years. When you visit their web-site at www.mission517.com you will see in their web-site a more church lead type of experience. For LHP this will have a strong humanitarian mission that will coincide with the mission of our school. The design is to welcome anyone of any faith to come on the trip. We will have some times where we will pray as a group from a Christian perspective and site scripture in the same way we do at LHP. Their belief is as ours – our Christian values are the witness through our giving actions in the town of Tamarindo. If you have any questions regarding the Christian emphasis on this trip, please give me a call – Rev. Joe Sims, 407-206-1900 ext. 3303 or email me at jsims@lhps.org.

A message from Mission 517 – Pastor Bill and wife Janie Crofton: “We have been operating now for 4 1/2 years in the Guanacaste Region of Costa Rica - on the Pacific side. We picked an area that had terrific need, actually the most needs in Costa Rica. Our focus is, humanitarian, relationship building & trust, educational enhancement in the local schools, and building leadership skills while impacting lives.

We have connected with the "Guanacaste Foundation".  Mr. Patillo from Atlanta

(Graduate of Georgia Tech & General Contractor) has given us the opportunity to

connect with the Ministry of Education and receive permission to work in the public

schools of the region. Our liaisons on the ground are Leonie and Jonathan Creech who are vital in the work there.

Mission 517 has built a close relationship with the people of Tamarindo and Villa Real.

We have worked now in fourteen public schools in the area.

Another important part of this project is interfacing with local high school students who have been selected to compete for a scholarship provided by the Guanacaste Foundation.  There are 13 students studying in Atlanta to date.  All expenses paid for four years.  Eight more will be joining them this September.

In large part, thanks to the summer 2007 trip taken by LHP, Mission 517 has shifted it’s strategy.  We are adopting a local school for at least four years.  Each of our groups going will choose their school and place more emphasis on curriculum development.   In addition, this gives us greater opportunity to build life long friendships with students and teachers.

This is a unique trip.  Not your average mission trip.  We stay in a 5 star ocean front hotel. The Hotel Diria has become home.  The owner and staff are like family.  It is part of the mission as well. We look forward to working with you in Costa Rica. Pura Vida” - Pastor Bill and wife Janie Crofton

Mission 517’s LIST OF DO’S & DON’TS

How to enjoy Costa Rica

  1. DO travel light. Costa Rica is not a fashion show so it’s best to leave expensive jewelry and other items at home and blend in.

  1. DO try and speak the language. Costa Ricans love to help so just ask!

  1. DO tip well. What are you going to do with one extra dollar anyway? Many people from different countries are bad tippers. Don’t be one.

  1. DO bring lots of sunscreen and bug spray.

  1. DO bring balloons and small treats for the children.

  1. DO dress modestly at the work sites.

  1. DO practice respect and smile a lot. It’s the universal language.

  1. DO fear the Chupacabra!

  1. DON’T use US dollars unless you really have to. Part of the fun is paying in colorful money that you are not used to.

  1. DON’T leave anything in your vehicle, EVER!

  1. DON’T surf likes it’s your home break. Respect the locals and they will respect you.

  1. DON’T pack supply bags that we use to pass out clothes for your home climate. Costa Rica is on the equator and there is seldom use for jackets and sweaters. Long pants are acceptable but think as tropical as possible.

  1. DON’T bring your American work ethic. The Costa Ricans work hard but they play hard too and they do things at their own pace.

  1. DON’T WORRY! Everything you need to know to survive you learned in Kindergarten. Seriously, if you left something at home chances are the Tamarindo Supermart has it.

  1. DON’T pay attention to #8

PURA VIDA!
