 Donations to LHPS arts programs through purchases from the Arts Stamps program administered by the Arts League were substantial this year.  LS - $687; MS $212; US $95.  Look for the original artwork on display in the Rex Building.  LAUREN F's artwork won first place!

23 US students participated in an Arts League-sponsored MASTERS CLASS on 3/5/11 with actor Russ Blackwell teaching scene work and monologue.  An Improv Masters Class is in the works for the Spring.  Masters Classes are a gift to the school from the Arts League and all students are welcome.

LHPS music students competed in the District Solo & Ensemble events in January/February and took 20 Superior and 32 Excellent ratings: 

String Orchestra (grades 6-8): 13 Superiors (5 of which were with Distinction for memorization), 18 Excellent

Upper School Band: 3 Superior (going to state solo and ensemble), 10 Excellent

Upper School Chorus: 4 Superior, 4 Excellent 

Superior with Distinction String Orchestra: Chad L, Vrinda M, Alexia J, Stella K

Superior String Orchestra: Caroline R, Ajay D, Whitney B, Saara R, Sreya P ,Mackenzie B

Superior: Band-Collin, Hunter D, Sayres K

HAZE is the title of JONATHAN B's spectacular photograph of a bright white egret framed by foliage standing on a lake's edge.  The photo has been accepted for the 9th annual Orlando Magazine Paint the Town exhibition at the Gallery at Avalon Island, to be displayed starting March 17th.  Some of the works by selected artists will also be pictured in the March issue of Orlando Magazine.  View the photo in the Arts League Photo Gallery!

The Art Stamps website in January featured the work of four Lake Highland students:  7th grader CAROLINE C., 5th grader KATHLEEN O., 1st grader MADELINE H., and MICHAEL H. in Pre-K.

LEGACY and 901 NORTH SINGERS will perform in Atlanta at the Atlanta Hawks/Orlando Magic basketball game on March 30th.  These singers, as well as Academy Singers and Academy K will perform songs from the golden era of TV and famous movies at LHPS Grandparent's Day on March 10th.

The UPPER SCHOOL CHORUS visited Ben W. recently at his home as a cheerful and heartfelt greeting while Ben has cancer treatments.

JONATHAN B, a Lake Highland Senior, won Best Photograph at the Winter Park Library Teen Art Show!

TROY G. won both the Best of Show and Best Drawing at the Winter Park Library Teen Art Show.  Troy also was given a scholarship at the December First Friday Art Stroll, and sold 17 prints of his work.  Ten other AP art students participated and sold a combined 25 works at the event.  View photos of the event by JONATHAN B. in our Photo Gallery! 

ART CLUB MEMBERS reach out to the community by teaching art lessons at the Coalition for the Homeless each Tuesday night.  They also volunteered at the Festival of Trees in November to do face painting and help guide children through activities. 

The Community Food and Outreach Center benefited from the INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED ART STUDENTS who donated a dozen 3x3 paintings based on the theme "Hope." 

TOBY W. placed third, behind COLLEGE student entries, in the Atlanta-based Urban Filmmakers competition.  For the first time in the history of the college, TOBY has received early admission into CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY in Southern California based on his excellence in filmmaking. Congrats to Toby and all of his excellent LHPS instructors!

ART CLUB CARICATURE ARTISTS drew portraits of LS students for five hours during the fabulous Halloween Carnival in October!

DANAE N. was chosen to create original paintings onstage while the Christmas at the Harriett performances were going on in December. 

REPTARTAN is back!  The popular iconic mascot of the Lake Highland campus has had its first full body makeover...thanks to the Arts League!  RepTartan was re-installed in December after a lengthy absence while the refurbishing and repainting was completed.  Stop by and visit the bright, shiny new RepTartan adjacent to the Lower School building.

The LHPS FESTIVAL OF TREES was festive and lively for the holiday season.  The beautiful Arts League tree put together by several generous AL Board Members was a highlight of the Festival and brought a winning bid of $325 for LHPS. 

PROJECT MAGIC continues to spread goodwill representing LHPS at several area venues under GINGER B's guidance.   At the airport recently, the magicians entertained cancer patients who were part of The Cancer Center event where 1,000 special people enjoyed entertainment and games.  Our very own Project Magic students were a huge draw, attracting throngs of viewers.  Project Magic members regularly visit area hospitals and even made a recent special visit to a Lake Highland student receiving hospital care.

Circus clowns from RINGLING BROTHERS AND BARNUM & BAILEY held a special workshop in December with the members of PROJECT MAGIC.  And, the LHPS magicians held a stage show in November at the ORLANDO MUSEUM OF ART Festival of Trees for children from the Boys & Girls Clubs. 

The LOWER SCHOOL group of 3rd and 4th graders from Academy Singers performed at the White House in December and met the Obama family!  Hail to the Chief!  Look at the photos in the Arts League Photo Gallery.

HANDBELLS are popular!  The handbell set partially donated by the Arts League have been frequently used this school year already.  Performances include the Christmas at the Harriett, the US Choral Concert and in the US Choral Classroom.  CHRIS G. is also planning to use the handbells in a LS Academy Class second semester.

The MARCHING HIGHLANDER BAND has performed in the Orlando Veteran's Day Parade, and is elated to be part of the 2011 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans!  Band members in grades 6-12 will also be performing with the world renowned Dallas Brass in the HCCA on Jan. 10th.

Auburn University awarded a scholarship to MICHAEL S. ‘10 who, as a Freshman, is active in the university orchestra playing the clarinet, and is a member of the marching band.

Celebrating a decade of excellence for her service at Lake Highland, TRUDY B. was honored by students past and present who put on a medley of all the shows Trudy has directed. Congrats, Trudy!

Three LHPS 2010 graduates are well into their studies as Freshman theatre students at NYU, one of the nation’s premier theatre programs. RACHEL H., ZACH G. and DIEGO C. are all doing well in The Big Apple!

SHREYA B., a junior, is nominated for Orlando Sentinel “Student Star.” She consistently displays great talent, verve, and passion in Visual Art. Shreya’s art has been shown in numerous venues where she received awards and accolades. Additionally, Shreya’s passion for taking her art talent into the world of Community Service sets her apart from other students. She has participated with established local and international organizations, as well as establishing her own original projects for Community Service. Within her school community, she leads community service projects, participates in peer reviews, and participates in public art venues. Congrats, Shreya!

LHPS Senior TROY G. is the highlighted artist for the Ivanhoe Village Art Stroll on Dec. 3. Here is a statement from the ArtsHub press release. “A promising young artist from Lake Highland Preparatory School’s Visual Arts Program, Troy’s talent has already been noticed. His chiaroscuro oil pastels lend atmospheric tones to ordinary still life studies, and the ArtsHub curators have chosen him to highlight, sponsoring his booth for December. ‘Troy shows that art education in Orlando is alive and well,’ stated ArtsHub curator Brad Biggs.”

TOBY W.’S film “Coming to Terms” won first place in the drama category in the International Student Film Festival Hollywood! He will be attending the event in November where his film will be shown. Toby is a Lake Highland Senior. Way to go, Toby!

CALHOUN C., 5th grade, created stamp artwork in the annual, nationwide Art Stamps program that was selected to be included in the Art Stamps October website titled "Looks Like October." Nice work, Calhoun!

DANIELLE G. placed in the 10,000 Villages Art Competition, “Why the World Needs Fair Trade” for Central Florida Students grades 1-12. Congrats, Danielle!

ADVANCED ART STUDENTS are painting a dozen motivational paintings for Harvest Food Outreach Center, formerly Destiny Foundation. The paintings will be featured at the charity’s luncheon on Nov. 4th with the artists in attendance as the guests of the founder.

Our very own ROSALI M. from the arts faculty is pictured with art students in the nationally distributed “art stamps” brochure. the brochure is used by every school and organization that participates in this popular art program.

AEMY P. in 7th grade won the summer 2010 CHART smile art and writing contest sponsored by the magazine. CHART raises funds for charities and awareness for the arts in central Florida. Aemy was featured in the Fall 2010 issue with a photo of her surrounded by her beautiful paintings.

ADDIE H. (10th grade) was selected to be in the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Choir. Over 4,000 students from across the country auditioned to be in one of four choirs. Addie was chosen from among 1,200 young women to be in the Women’s 2011 National Honors Choir. She will attend the ACDA conference in Chicago in March to rehearse with the choir and will present a concert March 12th.

LHPS Junior student GIUILA F. had her drawing selected to be one of the pieces featured on ArtStamps' website for November.
