2008 – 2009 College Planning

Calendar for Seniors

 

 

 

August 2008

  • Aug. 12 – Registration deadline for the Sept. 13 ACT.
  • Aug. 23 – Senior Kick-Off (Bourne Chapel) from 9:30 – 11:30 (required of all seniors and strongly recommended for parents)
  • Meet with your College Counselor to discuss your final college list and discuss application deadlines.
  • Make sure your College Quest, Family Data Sheet, Resume, Transcript Release, Parent Insights and Teacher Recommendation Form are all on file in the College and Career Center.
  • Begin working on your college essay (if you have not already done so).

 

September

  • Sept. 9 – Registration deadline for the Oct. 4 SAT (offered at LHPS).
  • Sept. 13 – ACT Test Date (offered at LHPS)
  • Sept. 19 – Registration deadline for the Oct. 25 ACT
  • Sept. 26 – Registration deadline for the Nov. 1 SAT
  • Begin working on your applications if you are planning to apply Early Decision or Early Action
  • Ask teachers who know you well and with whom you have a good relationship to write a letter of recommendation for you (if required by the college and typically no more than two).  Provide teachers with the proper request form, your resume, a stamped return card, and a pre-addressed stamped envelope with the college’s complete mailing address
  • Meet with college representatives who visit LHP (Sept. – Nov.)
  • National Merit applicants submit materials to the College and Career Center
  • You may file the CSS Financial Aid Profile online at www.collegeboard.com

 

October

  • Oct. 4 – SAT Test Date (offered at LHPS).
  • Oct. 7 – Orlando Area College Night at Valencia Community College, 7 – 9 p.m.
  • Oct. 8 – University of Central Florida priority notification deadline.
  • Oct. 15 – Florida State University application deadline.
  • Oct. 25 – ACT Test Date

 

November

  • Nov. 1 – University of Florida application deadline.
  • Nov. 1 and Nov. 15 are Early Decision and Early Action application deadlines for many colleges and universities.
  • Nov. 1 – SAT Test Date
  • Nov. 5 – Registration deadline for the Dec. 6 SAT
  • Nov. 7 – Registration deadline for the Dec. 13 ACT

 

December

  • Dec. 1 – Deadline to submit all remaining applications to the College and Career Center
  • Dec. 6 – SAT Test Date

  • Feb. 7 – ACT Test Date
  • Feb. 10 – Registration deadline for the March 14 SAT
  • Feb. 27 – Registration deadline for the April 4 ACT
  • Feb. 28 – Central Florida College Fair at Orangewood Christian School, 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

 

March

  • March 14 – SAT Test Date (SAT only)
  • March 31 – Registration deadline for the May 2 ACT (offered at LHPS)

 

April

  • April 4 – ACT Test Date (offered at LHPS)
  • April 15 – Final Notification date for colleges.  Majority of seniors should have received final admission decision(s) prior to this date. 
  • Evaluate colleges/universities for which you were accepted.  Evaluate financial aid packages.  Make your final college choice after you receive your acceptances.  Decline any offers of admission in writing so that colleges can admit other applicants.

 

May

  • May 1 – This is Decision Day, the deadline for you to notify colleges of your final decision.  Place only one deposit.  Please refer to the Statement of Student’s Rights and Responsibilities provided by the National Association of College Admission Counseling
  • May 2 – SAT Test Date (offered at LHPS)
  • May 4 – 15, – Advanced Placement Exams
  • May 23 – Graduation Day for the LHPS Class of 2009!!!

Referring to the chart below, mark the dates on the RIGHT on your calendars as the days your completed Records Request Form, including Secondary School Report Form and request for counselor recommendations will be due in the College and Career Center.  The dates on the LEFT are the colleges’ deadlines.

2008 – 2009 College Planning

Calendar for Juniors

 

General Expectations:

 

By the end of your junior year, we expect you to have:

 

  1. met with your counselor at least once in the spring semester
  2. taken the SAT I and ACT at least one time each, and registered for the SAT II tests, if required by the colleges you are interested in
  3. established a preliminary list of potential colleges

 

August 2008

 

  • Be sure your schedule includes courses that strengthen your academic record and help complete graduation requirements
  • Focus on academics, being mindful that junior grades are very important to college admission committees

 

September

 

  • Review sample questions in the PSAT Student Bulletin that will be distributed in Math and/or English classes
  • Meet with college representatives as they visit Lake Highland’s College and Career Center.  Come to these meetings if you have serious interest in a school and be prepared with good questions
  • Start thinking about your preferences in colleges in broad terms (location, size, programs, etc.)

 

October

 

  • TBA – Attend the Orlando Area College Night at Valencia Community College, 6-8 p.m.
  • Oct. 15 – PSAT Test Date.  This is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Competition.  You do not need to register for the test.  LHPS will take care of that for you (all LHPS juniors take the PSAT)
  • Continue to meet with college representatives as they visit Lake Highland

 

November

 

  • Begin planning trip(s) to visit colleges during Winter Break (February) and Spring Break (April) 

 

December

 

  • Dec. 9 – College Forum for Juniors and Parents of Juniors.  A panel of distinguished speakers will address the students in the morning and will meet with your parents that evening in a separate meeting.  The information presented in this meeting is critical to a strong start to the college search and application process.  Students will receive their College Handbook and sign up for a meeting to see their respective College Counselor at this meeting.  Attendance is strongly encouraged.
  • Dec. 26 – Registration deadline for the Jan. 24 SAT
  • Talk to recent LHP graduates who are home from college for the holidays about their college experience.  They are a great resource.
  • Use your grade point average and PSAT scores to determine your initial academic eligibility for your colleges of interest

 

January 2009

 

  • Jan. 6 – Registration deadline for the Feb. 7 ACT.
  • TBA – NCAA Recruiting Meeting:  Intended for student-athletes who plan to participate in collegiate athletics.
  • Jan. 24 – SAT Test Date
  • Concentrate on doing well in your classes.
  • Set up an appointment to meet with your College Counselor sometime between January and April to discuss your college choices and PSAT scores.
  • Return the paperwork requested by your counselor.  The paperwork (College Quest, Parent Insights, etc.) can be found in the College Handbook provided to you (or your parent) at the College Forum in December.   Completed forms are required by your counselor before a letter of recommendation will be prepared for you.

 

February

 

  • Feb. 7 – ACT Test Date.
  • Feb. 28 – Central Florida College Fair at Orangewood Christian School from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  To save time at the college fair, create labels showing your name, contact info (address, phone, and email) and school, and come prepared with general questions to ask the representatives about their respective college.
  • Make a concerted effort to do well in your classes.  Remember that junior grades are considered heavily in the college admission process.
  • Take a test prep course, if appropriate
  • Begin to research colleges (refer to the suggestions in the materials you were given during the College Forum).
  • Visit colleges of interest during Winter Break (take notes so that you do not forget your thoughts)
  • Plan to visit colleges of interest during Spring Break.
  • You will begin receiving materials from colleges that found your PSAT scores satisfactory.  Read/Glance through these materials and begin a filing system at home to keep you organized.

 

 

March

 

  • March 14 – SAT Test Date
  • March 31 – Registration deadline for the May 2 SAT (offered at LHPS)
  • If you have not already done so, meet with your College Counselor to discuss your senior schedule and college plans.
  • Visit with admissions representatives who visit Lake Highland
  • Continue to research colleges
  • Plan a productive summer experience (Work, travel or volunteer.  Whatever you do, have fun.)

 

April

 

  • April 4 – ACT Test Date (offered at LHPS)
  • If you are interested in a service academy or an ROTC scholarship you should begin the application process at this time – your counselor will provide guidance and information.
  • Visit college campuses over Spring Break (take notes so that you do not forget your thoughts)

 

 

May

 

  • May 2 – SAT Test Date
  • May 4 – 15 – Advanced Placement Exams
  • May 5 – Registration deadline for the June 6 SAT
  • May 8 – Registration deadline for the June 13 ACT
  • Make your best effort to perform at your best on second semester exams and coursework.
  • If appropriate, take SAT II Subject Tests that correspond to courses you will complete this semester (May or June test dates).
  • Plan summer college visits.

 

June – August

 

  • June 6 – SAT Test Date
  • June 13 – ACT Test Date
  • Continue to research colleges
  • Take a test prep course, if appropriate.
  • Do your summer reading.
  • Visit college campuses for those colleges for which you are interested, recognize that you may need to return to some campuses when they are in session to get a better picture of the school, including the student body and social scene.
  • Be accountable for your time.  Colleges like to see that you have spent your summers doing something productive (summer job, community service, etc.).
  • LHPS College Counselors are available throughout the summer to answer any questions you or your parents may have.

2008 – 2009 College Planning

Calendar for Sophomores

 

FALL

 

§         Attend one of the Orlando Area College Nights: 

TBA - Valencia Community College Campuses, 7 – 9 p.m.

§         Continue solid academic progress in challenging courses.

§         Review information on the PSAT by reading your Student Bulletin and working the sample questions.

§         Take the PSAT for practice on October 15th.  The results will not be used for college admission but will provide helpful practice for the PSAT you take in junior year.  This test can qualify you for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

§         Stay involved in extracurricular activities that interest you.  The level of involvement and accomplishment is most important, not the number of activities.  Keep an updated record.

§         Make sure you are “on top” of your academic progress.  If necessary, meet with your teachers for additional help.

 

WINTER

 

  • Feb. 28  - Attend the Central Florida College Fair (Bishop Moore Catholic High School, 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.).  Bring labels showing your name and address, and come prepared with general questions to ask the representatives about their respective college.
  • Review results of the PSAT.  Read the materials sent with your score report.  Consult your counselor to explore ways to improve on future standardized tests.  You may want to consider taking the Logic and Semantics course offered by Lake Highland during your junior year.
  • Meet with your counselor to discuss courses which may be required or beneficial for your post-high school plans.
  • Attend area college information sessions.  These informal meetings are posted on the LHP website and outside of the College and Career Center.
  • It is never too early to start researching colleges and universities.  Visit the College and Career Center to browse through literature, guidebooks, or surf the Web for college home pages.

 

SPRING

 

  • March 5 - Attend the Sophomore College Planning Meeting with your parents.
  • If appropriate, register for SAT II Subject Tests that correspond with courses you will complete in May.
  • Sophomore College Tour (Dates and Locations: TBA).
  • Register in April for June SAT II Subject test(s).  These are one-hour exams on academic subjects you have completed.  Among the many to choose from are biology, chemistry, foreign languages, and physics.  Many selective colleges require up to three SAT II tests.
  • Continue to research career options and consider possible college majors that will help you achieve your career goals.

 

SUMMER

 

  • Use your summer wisely.  Consider taking a summer course or participating in a special program related to your field of interest.  Think about volunteering or getting some work experience.
  • If appropriate, take SAT II Subject Tests that correspond with courses you just completed (June).
  • Tour college campuses with your family or on an organized tour.

Freshmen College Planning Guide

 

§        Build strong academic, language, mathematics and critical thinking skills by taking challenging courses.

§        Attend the Freshman College Planning Meeting with your parents on September.

§        Focus on your grades!  This is the starting point of your cumulative grade point average (the grade point average reported to colleges).

§        Get involved!  Join one or two extracurricular activities and take on a leadership role.

§        Attend the Orlando Area College Nights:  October 6th, at Seminole Community College, Sanford Campus, 6 – 8 p.m., October 7th, at Valencia Community College Osceola Campus, 6 – 8 p.m., and October 9th, at Valencia Community College West Campus, 6 – 8 p.m.

§        Take the PSAT test on October 15th.  This will provide practice for the PSAT you will take in junior year to qualify for scholarships sponsored through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.  Take the test seriously, as your teachers review test scores before making course recommendations for the next year.
