Chip Layson Memorial Gifts
We thank the LHPS family for the outpouring of love since Chip Layson’s death September 7, 2007. Chip was the consummate Highlander- he graduated in 1989 from LHPS and returned to teach here in 1993 after graduating from the University of Florida. Chip’s wife, Heather, and their three children Zed, Caroline and Harris, have been overwhelmed by the many expressions of affection: 1600 attended Chip’s funeral and there have been innumerable notes, prayers, calls and meals for the family.

The school is taking care of the Lake Highland tuition for his three children and we established two funds to help in other ways. We have ordered a flagpole in Chip's memory and hope to install it at the southwest corner of the football field as soon as it arrives. Susan and Rick Goings' leadership gift, along with gifts from many other families, enabled us to purchase a beautiful memorial that is so appropriate for Chip, who played football on that field and coached soccer there.

We also have established a 529 college savings plan for Chip's children funded by $70,000 in donations from many generous Lake Highland families, alumni, and friends. Upper School students are organizing a roller skating party for November 11th and the Senior Class is planning a golf tournament for November 25th in memory of Chip. The proceeds from these two events will be added to the 529 account and will conclude our fundraising efforts for the Layson children.

Chip’s love for LHPS and his devotion to teaching and to our students had a profound impact on countless lives. We were all blessed by his teaching, his friendship, his service, and his leadership.
