Community book:
The purpose of a school-wide community book is to establish a common academic experience for everyone and create a shared intellectual point of engagement. Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands is set in Central Florida and is a true story on all but a few accounts. Susan Carol McCarthy (the author) and Evangeline Moore (daughter of slain civil rights activist Harry T. Moore) will be speaking on campus on August 27th. We encourage our entire community – students, faculty, and parents – to read and discuss the book. If you’d like some questions to guide your reading, go to http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780553381030&view=rg for a reader’s guide. All assignments pertaining to Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands will take place in Social Studies classes prior to August 27th.

Freshman reading:
Freshmen will engage in ongoing discussions of The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make during their homeroom periods in the fall.

10th, 11th, and 12th grade assigned English reading:
The 10th, 11th, and 12th grade books assigned for English (Ender’s Game, Peace Like a River, and Man’s Search for Meaning) will be discussed and assessed in English classes during the first few days of the 2008-2009 school year.

Book club book (10th, 11th, and 12th grade):
Finally, students will be grouped according to the “book club” book they selected for discussions and activities early in the 08-09 school year.  Students should be prepared to complete a writing assignment about their book on the first or second day of school.
