The Lake Highland College and Career Center offers a comprehensive college planning program for each grade level in the Upper School. With the assistance of the Dean of College Counseling and Guidance, two College Counselors, two Guidance Counselors and a Career Counselor, students learn to plan for their futures one step at a time. We consider the development of each child at every grade level as we help direct students through their post secondary planning, as well as provide personal and academic counseling to students throughout their high school careers. Every student is carefully guided through the college planning and application process. The link below provides a detailed timetable of our programs in grades 9 – 12.
Formal college planning begins in the junior year with the College Forum and a College Planning Handbook. Students meet individually with their assigned college counselors in January and throughout the second semester as they begin to formulate an initial college list. Additionally, our juniors enjoy and benefit from the opportunity to explore career options with our internship program during the spring.
In the senior year, college counselors provide constant support with each facet of the application process and provide letters of recommendation for students. Application procedures are reviewed for both seniors and their parents at a meeting early in the senior year. It is critical for our students to be well organized and prepared for the demands of the application process. Advanced planning and an early start are strongly recommended.
Our students are fortunate to have representatives from over one hundred colleges and universities visit the Lake Highland campus each year. These meetings provide our students with the opportunity to further explore the variety of programs available to them and to have their specific questions addressed. Additionally, the College and Career Center faculty are actively involved in regional and national associations, visiting college and university campuses, and attending conferences each year for professional development.
We encourage each of our students to consider his or her interests and abilities and select college programs that best suit their individual needs. Students are directed to consider the many types of colleges and universities available to them, and with the support of their counselor, be thorough in their research. Lake Highland is very proud of the depth and range of colleges and universities our students apply to each year. Their choices reflect college and university destinations where our students can be happy to live and learn.
