Middle School FAQs

  1. What is FLING?
    Fling is a morning break each day after First Period.
    The cafeteria is open for snacks.
    Students may meet with their teacher or visit with friends!
    On Wednesdays during Fling many students meet in the Bourne Chapel for FLO-Faith Lived Out loud, for a time of fellowship and spiritual topics- “Easier experienced than explained”!
     
  2. What is a Mentor Group?
    Each student has a teacher mentor with whom they build a relationship outside of the classroom. Mentor groups meet 4th period Tuesday – Thursday and on designated Fridays for fellowship, character lessons, current events, activities or an assembly. All Mentor groups also complete a service project during the school year.
     
  3. What is Spirit Day?
    Spirit Day is almost always on Friday. Students may wear LHP spirit shirts and jeans. Also, Student Council sponsors College T-Shirt Day the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Students may wear a college t-shirt and jeans for a $1 donation.
     
  4. Does Middle School have dances or parties?
    Yes! The “Back to School Bash”, Halloween Party, and the Neon Dance. Parents may sign up with Grade Level Coordinators to chaperone dances.
     
  5. How do we find out what’s new in Middle School?
    Friday of each week Mr. Daly sends an email to parents with news and announcements. LHPS also posts Week-At-A Glance on www.lhps.org/news/week-at-a-glance every Friday.
     
  6. How do students keep track of homework assignments?
    Teachers maintain their own courses in Canvas and update them every Friday.
    To access, go to the LHPS homepage, click on Students, then Student Resources, then click on Canvas and enter your LHPS user ID and password.
     
  7. What is PowerSchool?
    PowerSchool is the LHPS database for grades and attendance. Parents are assigned a password which enables them to access their child’s progress and grades. For PowerSchool questions call Joan Kettlehut at ext. 3323 or Erica Bolstein at ext. 3322.
     
  8. What if my child is sick and does not come to school?
    Please call Mrs. West at ext. 2000. Refer to the student handbook for homework and testing policies.

    If your student is sick in the morning and comes late to school, the student must sign in with a note in the Middle School Office before going to class. Students who must leave school during the day must be signed out in the Middle School Office by a parent or guardian.

    If your family plans to travel while school is in session and your child must miss school, a Pre-Excused Absence form must be obtained from Mrs. West in the Middle School Office at least one week in advance. Travel should not be scheduled during Final Exam Weeks in December and May. Please check dates before you make reservations.
     
  9. Do Middle School students wear Wednesday Dress on the first day of school? YES!

    Remember to “break in” your dress shoes or you’ll need a lot of band aids!
     
  10. Does Middle School have sports teams?
    Yes, Lake Highland offers a variety of sports for our Middle School Students. Our girls and boys teams participate in the Greater Orlando Athletic Conference. Additional information on sports can be found on the LHP Athletic webpage.
